Struggling with slow progress? Here’s how to stay motivated to lose weight, even when results are slow. Mindset tips and strategies to keep you moving forward.

If you’ve ever tried to lose weight, you probably know the feeling all too well:
You’re eating better, moving more, making healthier choices — and yet, the scale isn’t moving.
Or even worse, it’s jumping up and down like a yo-yo, making you wonder if all your hard work is even worth it.
When I was on my journey to losing 20kg, I had so many moments where progress felt painfully slow. There were weeks where nothing changed, and times when it felt like I was moving backwards instead of forwards. It would have been easy to give up — but I didn’t. And I’m so glad I kept going.
If you’re feeling like you’re losing motivation because the results aren’t coming fast enough, you’re definitely not alone. But giving up won’t get you any closer to your goals — and neither will expecting everything to happen overnight.
In this post, I’m sharing the exact mindset shifts and strategies that helped me stay motivated to lose 20kg — even when it felt like nothing was happening.

How To Keep Yourself Motivated To Lose Weight
Why Many Lose Motivation. Does This Sound Familiar?
At the start of a weight loss journey, motivation is often at its peak. You’re excited, ready to take on the challenge, and fully committed to the process. But then, real life sets in. The scale doesn’t budge for weeks, or you lose a few kilos and then hit a plateau. Despite doing everything “right,” your progress seems to stall. You’re putting in the work, but the results feel minimal, and that’s when motivation starts to fade.
You might begin to ask yourself:
“Why am I even doing this?”
“Maybe this just isn’t working for me.”
“I might as well give up.”
Sound familiar?
Here’s the truth: weight loss is never a straight line. Progress is often slow, messy, and unpredictable. And that’s completely normal — it doesn’t mean you’re failing. Everyone loses weight at different rates, and relying solely on motivation can lead to giving up too soon.
When starting your weight loss journey, it’s important to focus on discipline and consistency. Because even when progress seems slow, these are the qualities that will ultimately get you the results you want.
How To Stay Motivated To Lose Weight Even When Progress Is Slow
1. Expect Plateaus And Fluctuations
The truth is, the scale won’t always go down every week — no matter how perfectly you stick to your plan. This is especially true for women, as our hormones fluctuate throughout the month, influencing everything from water retention to bloating, making weight loss progress feel anything but linear.
When you’re on a weight loss journey, there will be weeks where the scale stays exactly the same. But that doesn’t mean your body isn’t changing. I’ve worked with over 250 women using my weight loss guide, and many have shared that, even when the scale plateaued, they noticed their clothes fitting better, their energy levels improving, and a significant decrease in sugar cravings. These are powerful signs of progress in your fat loss journey — even if the number on the scale doesn’t move.

You’ll also have days where bloating feels intense, and that’s completely normal. It could be due to where you are in your cycle (many women experience bloating during their luteal phase), dehydration, or consuming high-sodium foods. These factors can increase the number on the scale and leave you feeling frustrated, but they don’t indicate failure.
Plateaus and fluctuations are a natural part of the process — not a sign that it’s not working. When you expect these ups and downs, you can stop letting them derail your motivation.
2. Focus On Habits, Not Just The Number
If you only focus on the number on the scale, you’ll always feel like it’s not enough. The truth is, weight loss isn’t just about that one number; it’s about the habits you’re building every day. Instead of obsessing over the scale, ask yourself:
- Did I eat balanced meals today?
- Did I move my body?
- Did I drink enough water?
- Did I get enough sleep?
These are the habits that truly lead to sustainable weight loss — not the daily ritual of stepping on the scale. Once I stopped fixating on that number, I began noticing other signs of progress, and I actually started enjoying the journey.
This shift in mindset helped me lose 20kg. If I had kept focusing solely on the scale, I don’t think I would’ve been able to shed my baby weight and get in the best shape of my life.
One quote that really helped me stay motivated, and that I still tell myself today when I need a boost, is:
“Marry the process, divorce the results.”
Fall in love with the daily actions, and the results will follow — even if they take longer than you expect.

3. Reconnect With Your ‘Why’
When weight loss feels slow, it’s easy for motivation to fade. That’s when it’s crucial to reconnect with why you started in the first place. Ask yourself:
- Why do I want to lose weight?
- What version of myself am I working toward?
- How will my life change once I reach my goal?
Your “why” needs to be more profound than simply wanting to look a certain way. It could be:
- Wanting to feel strong and healthy for your family.
- Craving more energy to fully live your life.
- Desiring to break free from old habits that no longer serve you.
When your “why” is strong and deep enough — enough to move you emotionally — it will carry you through the hard days. And if your current “why” isn’t motivating you, it might be time to dig deeper.
In my weight loss guide, I included a “why” section under the goal-setting page to encourage people to write out their reasons. This has been one of the most powerful tools in my own 20kg weight loss journey, helping me stay focused even when motivation waned.

4. Celebrate Small Wins
If you only celebrate the big milestones — like reaching your goal weight — it can feel like you’re never doing enough. Instead, start celebrating the small victories:
- Losing your first 1–2 pounds.
- Choosing a healthy meal when you could’ve gone for fast food.
- Feeling more confident in your clothes.
- Having more energy to play with your kids.
- Saying no to old habits and making healthier choices.
These small wins add up to significant changes over time. Recognizing and celebrating them keeps your motivation alive, even when the scale seems to move slowly.
Trust The Process Even When It’s Slow
If you’re feeling discouraged because your weight loss is slower than you hoped, I get it. I’ve been there, and countless others have too. But remember — slow progress is still progress.
In fact, slow and steady weight loss is the kind that leads to lasting results. The flashy promises of “lose 10 pounds in a week” don’t bring real, sustainable change — consistency does.
So, the next time you feel like giving up, remind yourself:
- You’re not failing.
- Your body is adjusting.
- You’re building a healthier life, one choice at a time.
Stay connected to your “why,” celebrate every small step, and trust the process.
