Discover how perfectionism can hinder your progress and lead to common weight loss mistakes. Learn to avoid pitfalls and achieve your fitness goals effectively

Starting a weight loss journey often comes with high expectations and a tendency to make common weight loss mistakes. Many of these mistakes stem from popular weight loss myths. A link between perfectionism and weight loss is particularly important to recognize. While striving for the best results is natural, perfectionism can sometimes work against you and hinder your progress.
I’ve been on my own weight loss journey for over two years. After making many mistakes along the way, I have learned valuable lessons that helped me lose 20kg. Now, I’m here to share these insights with you, highlighting the biggest obstacles to losing weight and how to avoid them.
A significant number of weight loss mistakes arise from believing common myths. One prevalent myth is that to be healthy, you need to lose weight. This misconception can lead you to take the wrong actions. In reality, focusing on overall health is the best way to lose weight and maintain it. Prioritizing health leads to weight loss, not the other way around.
In this post, I’ll be sharing the common weight loss mistakes people make. I’ll also be going into understanding a perfectionist mindset in weight loss to see if it applies to you. Additionally, we’ll discuss why perfectionism can be counterproductive and how to overcome it.
By understanding and avoiding these mistakes, you can achieve your weight loss goals more effectively and maintain a healthier lifestyle.
This post is all about weight loss mistakes.
Understanding the Perfectionist Mindset in Weight Loss
Here are 3 common perfectionist mindset people have when it comes to weight loss:
All-or-Nothing Thinking
This used to be me—I thought if I couldn’t give 100% to my workouts or couldn’t complete my planned 30-minute session, then there was no point in doing it at all.
Many people have this mindset with healthy eating too. During a weight loss journey, progress is never linear. You won’t always be at 100% with exercising, eating healthy, or managing stress. There will be ups and downs. It’s okay if you can’t have a perfect meal or if you can only fit in a 10-minute workout instead of 30.
Doing something, no matter how small, is better than doing nothing. Embracing this mindset shift has helped me stay disciplined and consistent, contributing significantly to my 20kg weight loss.
Self-Criticism
Being overly harsh on yourself for small slip-ups or not seeing immediate results is counterproductive. How many times have you felt bad for giving in to a craving or not sticking to your meal plan for a day? I’ve been there too.
Criticizing yourself for not meeting an unrealistic goal, like losing 10kg in a month, can demotivate you and hinder your progress.
Self-criticism can prevent you from putting in the effort to build a healthy lifestyle. Instead, practice self-compassion and acknowledge that setbacks are part of the journey.
Comparison
Constantly comparing yourself to others who are further along in their weight loss journey can be disheartening. We often compare our day 5 to someone else’s day 500 without realizing the struggles they faced to get there.
This comparison can lead to feelings of inadequacy and frustration. A digital detox can be helpful in combating this perfectionist mindset, as social media often fuels these comparisons. Remember, everyone’s journey is unique, and focusing on your progress is the key to success.
How A Perfectionist Mindset Can Be A Problem
Stress And Anxiety
The pressure to be perfect can lead to increased stress and anxiety. High stress levels raise cortisol, a hormone that stores fat around the belly. Constantly pressuring yourself is a huge weight loss mistake that can hold you back.
Burnout
Setting unrealistic goals and constantly criticizing yourself can lead to burnout, making it harder to maintain healthy habits. This often happens when you try to make too many changes at once or force long workouts, thinking it’s the only way to get the best results. All that pressure can be overwhelming.
Unhealthy Behaviours
Perfectionism can lead to unhealthy behaviors like yo-yo dieting, over-exercising, or giving up entirely. I’ve been there—it felt like trying to be healthy was more of a punishment than a positive change. This mindset leads to many other weight loss mistakes, which I’ll highlight below.
6 Common Weight Loss Mistakes
1. Eating As Little As Possible

Many people think that to lose weight or fat, they must eat as little as possible. However, this is one of the biggest mistakes you can make! The only thing you should eat less of is processed foods. Instead, focus on eating three whole meals and maybe one snack a day, eating until you feel satisfied to stay fuller longer. This approach will give you the best results.
I used to eat 1400-1500 calories a day, but now I eat 2000 or more and have lost much more fat than when I was eating less. Eating too little often leads to binge eating, especially on weekends, and increases cortisol levels because your body isn’t getting the fuel it needs. It can also slow down your metabolism. Eating enough, and eating the right foods, is key to successful weight loss.
2. Skipping Meals (Especially Breakfast)
I tried intermittent fasting for two days and just couldn’t handle it. For a long time, I thought skipping breakfast or eating as little as possible in the morning would help me lose weight. While fasting has its benefits, it’s not great for long-term success. Skipping meals or eating too little can lead to binge eating later.
If you’re skipping breakfast thinking it will help, you’re mistaken. To get the best results, especially to lower cortisol levels, which are highest in the morning, you need to eat within the first hour of waking up. A high-protein, savory breakfast helps control blood sugar levels, jump-starts your metabolism, and supports your weight loss journey.

3. High Expectations And Unrealistic Goals
Setting unrealistic goals, like losing a large amount of weight quickly, can be discouraging. While it’s great to dream big and set ambitious goals, aiming to lose 10kg in 1 or 2 months is often unrealistic. This can lead to disappointment and may cause you to quit.
Instead, setting a goal to lose 10kg over a year is much more realistic and sustainable. This approach encourages consistency and long-term commitment, making it more likely that you’ll achieve your goals and maintain your progress.
4. Choosing ‘Low Fat’ Foods

Choosing low-fat foods is a common weight loss mistake many people make, but it’s important to understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy fats. A question I often get on my Instagram DMs is, “Do fats make you fat, and should I buy low-fat yogurt and milk?” The truth is, healthy fats do not make you fat.
Milk, for example, naturally contains fat. When you buy skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, it’s more processed, and you’re left with mostly water and sugar. The fat in milk and other foods is there for a reason—it’s good for you, especially for fat burning.
So next time you pick up a food item labeled “low-fat,” remember that it’s often highly processed. Instead, choose whole foods with healthy fats, as they are essential for your overall health and can actually help with weight loss.
Examples of healthy fats:
- Avocados
- Nuts
- Seeds
- Olive oil
- Coconut oil
- Fatty fish e.g. salmon and mackerel
- Nut butters
- Dark chocolate (70% or higher)
- Full-fat dairy
- Eggs
5. Not Managing Stress
This is a weight loss mistake I struggled with for over a year. Stress plays a significant role in your weight loss journey, and ignoring your emotional health can hinder your progress.
Simply put, high stress levels increase cortisol, a hormone that tends to store fat, especially around your belly and face. If you’ve been working out and eating well but still can’t lose fat in these areas, it might be due to unbalanced cortisol levels. Managing stress is crucial for burning fat more effectively.
HERE are some stress management activities you can incorporate into your daily routine to help improve your results!
6. Drinking Your Calories

One major weight loss mistake many people overlook is the calories they consume through drinks. While they often focus on food, they forget that drinks can add significant calories to their daily intake.
For example, starting your day with a fruit smoothie instead of a high-protein, savory breakfast can spike your blood sugar levels and hinder fat burning. Even if you think drinks doesn’t affect your weight loss, they do.
Drinks like fruit juices and coffee (especially from coffee machines) can be packed with sugars. These don’t keep you full and can lead to increased hunger and cravings.
Often, we reach for a drink when we’re actually dehydrated. Instead, opt for water, which will help you stay hydrated and support fat burning by boosting your metabolism. So, next time you’re thirsty, choose water—it’s better for your weight loss journey and overall well-being.
How To Avoid The Biggest Weight Loss Mistakes
1. Set Realistic Goals
Instead of aiming for immediate results, focus on gradual progress. For example, if your goal is to lose 10kg, aiming to shed that weight in just 3 months might not be realistic. Such a tight deadline could lead to mistakes like skipping meals or eating too little, which often results in gaining the weight back.
There’s a saying: “The longer it takes to lose the weight, the longer it will stay off.” Setting realistic goals encourages a more sustainable approach to your weight loss journey. For instance, aiming to lose 10kg over a year is more achievable and helps avoid common pitfalls.
Instead of fixating on quick fixes, set smaller, manageable goals like “work out 5 times a week for 15-20 minutes” or “read a book and practice 5 minutes of breathing daily to manage stress.” By focusing on building healthy habits, you’re not just aiming to lose weight—you’re working on becoming healthier overall. And as you build these habits, you’ll start to see weight loss results. Trust the process and enjoy the journey!
2. Celebrate Small Wins
It’s crucial to recognize and reward yourself for small improvements and milestones. When you focus solely on the big goal, it’s easy to be hard on yourself. Celebrating the small victories helps maintain motivation and keeps you on track.
For instance, if you’re having a tough day but still manage to do a workout—even if you only put in 5-10% of your usual effort—this is a big deal. You stuck to your plan, and that consistency is key to reaching your main goal.
So, make sure to reward yourself and celebrate these small wins. They are the stepping stones that will lead you to your ultimate goal.
3. Focus On The Process, Not The Results
It’s important to value consistent efforts over perfect results. I remind myself of a saying that helps me stay motivated: “Marry the process, not the results.” Focusing too much on the end result can lead to mistakes and make you feel like your healthy habits aren’t working, even though they are helping you make progress.
Instead, enjoy the journey of becoming the healthiest version of yourself. By embracing the process and staying consistent, the results will follow. Trust the process and celebrate each step along the way!
4. Create A Sustainable Plan
Creating a balanced diet, exercise, and self-care plan that you can maintain long-term is key to weight loss success. This approach was a game-changer for me and helped me avoid common weight loss mistakes.
For example, as a busy mum and blogger, I don’t have time for hour-long gym sessions. Instead, I designed a routine where I work out 15-30 minutes, 5 times a week at home. This plan has kept me consistent over the last two years and delivered the best results I’ve ever had.
Make sure your changes fit your lifestyle so you can create a healthy routine that you can stick with. The goal is to build habits that are sustainable and effective in the long run.
