What Is The Most Effective Way To Lose Weight
6 Tips On How To Lose Weight Naturally
1. Understand Your ‘Why’ And Set Realistic Goals
Understand Your ‘Why’
One of the first and most important steps in a successful weight loss journey is understanding your why and setting realistic, actionable goals. Your why is your deep reason for wanting to achieve your goal—it’s what keeps you motivated when things get tough.
For example, when I started my weight loss journey a few months postpartum, I thought my why was just to lose the baby weight and “be skinny” again. But that reason wasn’t meaningful enough to keep me going, and I found myself giving up repeatedly. On top of that, my approach wasn’t effective, and I ended up gaining more weight instead of losing it.
It wasn’t until I uncovered my real, emotional why that I found my motivation. I wanted to be healthy, to show up as the happiest, healthiest version of myself as a mum, and to set a good example for my daughter—that eating healthy and staying active are part of a normal, balanced lifestyle. I realized that for my family to be healthy, I needed to lead by example. This deeper purpose became so powerful it kept me going even on the hardest days.
Set Realistic Goals
Once you’ve identified your why, setting realistic goals is next. Many people make the mistake of writing vague goals like, “I want to lose belly fat” or “I want to lose X kg.” These goals don’t provide clarity or direction. Instead, get specific and break your goals into actionable steps.
This is where the SMART framework can help—your goals should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example:
- Goal: Lose X kg by the end of the year.
- Actionable steps to get there:
- Eat 20-30g of protein at every meal.
- Exercise 4-5 times a week.
- Focus on whole, nutritious foods and limit cheat meals to once a week.
Breaking down your big goal into smaller, actionable steps makes it easier to stay on track and measure your progress. These steps are what drive real results. Check out my blog post on setting SMART goals for a detailed guide on creating goals that work!
2. Focus On Lifestyle Changes, Not Quick Fixes
When starting a weight loss journey, many people look for quick fixes. They’re constantly searching online for things like “how to lose weight in 7 days” or “how to lose belly fat in a week,” not realizing that these approaches are often the most unsustainable.
I see countless videos of people claiming they lost 30kg in just 2-3 months, but the problem is they were likely following plans that aren’t maintainable, leading them to regain the weight just as quickly. As the saying goes: “The longer it takes to lose weight, the longer you’ll keep it off.”
The most effective way to lose weight and keep it off is by making sustainable lifestyle changes that you can stick to—even after you’ve hit your goal. For example, many people recommend counting calories, but let’s be honest—how long can you realistically keep doing that? Your body doesn’t understand calories; it understands nutrition. Learning what foods work best for your body—especially your gut—is key to losing weight naturally and sustainably.
This is exactly what I teach in my weight loss guide. I dive deep into how certain foods affect your body, why calorie counting often doesn’t work, and what whole, nutritious foods you should be eating. I also explain how to control your blood sugar levels to stop constant cravings or hunger, even when you’ve just eaten.
The real secret to lasting weight loss is focusing on healthy habits that you genuinely enjoy and can stick to for life. It’s about building a healthy lifestyle that feels good, fits into your everyday routine, and allows you to maintain your results without feeling restricted.

3. Whole Foods And Balanced Meals

I often get asked on Instagram, “What weight loss foods should I be eating?” Many people believe there are specific foods that magically help with weight loss—and I don’t blame them. With all the marketing around so-called “weight loss” products like protein bars, low-calorie ready-made pastas, or low-fat dairy, it’s easy to get confused.
The truth is, these foods are often highly processed. Even if they’re labeled as low-calorie, they can spike your blood sugar levels and negatively impact your health over time.
The best way to lose weight sustainably, while supporting your health and achieving lasting results, is to focus on real nutrition. A balanced meal with real proteins, healthy fats, and fiber is key. If you’re unsure what whole foods to include, check out my grocery list blog post for examples of nutritious options that can form the foundation of your meals.
There’s no such thing as “weight loss foods.” Instead, it’s about choosing real, whole foods and avoiding processed items and excess sugar that can derail your progress and harm your health. Focus on nourishing your body, and the results will follow!
4. Do Exercises You Enjoy
If you’ve ever wondered what the best exercise for weight loss or fat-burning is, here’s a surprise: it’s not cardio, as many believe! The most effective method is strength training. Strength training helps you burn fat even while you’re resting, making it incredibly efficient.
But here’s the key: it’s important to choose a workout style you genuinely enjoy. Strength training doesn’t have to mean lifting heavy weights at the gym—it could be something like at-home mat Pilates, which often incorporates weights, too.
Remember, results come from consistency, not how long you work out. The best way to stay consistent is by finding exercises that you look forward to doing. And no, you don’t need a gym membership to lose weight—I personally lost 20kg working out at home.

5. Manage Stress And Improve Sleep Quality

If you’re exercising regularly and eating well but still not seeing results, it might be due to factors beyond your workout and diet. Two major culprits that can significantly affect your progress are stress and sleep quality.
High-stress levels and poor sleep disrupt your hormones—especially cortisol, the stress hormone. Elevated cortisol can signal your body to store fat, particularly around your midsection, and make it harder to lose weight.
Poor sleep and chronic stress also affect hunger hormones like ghrelin and leptin, increasing cravings for sugary, fatty junk foods and spiking insulin levels, which can further slow fat loss.
This was something I struggled with personally. Despite eating well and exercising, my results were delayed because I overlooked the impact of stress and sleep. There’s a saying: “Your desired body shape is 50% nutrition, 40% emotions, and 10% exercise.” That 40% reflects how much your stress levels, hormones, and sleep quality influence your progress.
To see real results, focus on managing stress with daily stress management techniques like mindfulness, meditation, or journaling. Pair this with an evening routine that helps you relax and prepare for a restful night’s sleep. Improving these areas will not only support your weight loss but also enhance your overall well-being.
6. Focus On Non-Scale Victories
Many people feel like they’re not losing weight or making progress because they only rely on the scale to track their results. But the scale doesn’t tell the full story of your progress.
For example, I stayed at the same weight for three months and felt stuck. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, those tight high-waisted jeans that once pinched my stomach became so loose I could fit my daughter inside them! That’s when I realized the scale isn’t the best way to measure success.
Instead, focus on non-scale victories to track your progress and celebrate wins:
- Clothes fitting better
- Dropping inches in measurements
- Increased energy and improved mood
- Getting stronger and seeing fitness improvements
These victories show if your efforts are working, even if the number on the scale fluctuates due to things like water retention, muscle gain, or hormonal changes. Progress is about more than a number—start looking for the wins that truly matter!
