Places To Visit In Istanbul With Family That Are Free
1. Mosques At Sultanahmet

One of the best free things to do in Istanbul is to explore the stunning mosques in Sultanahmet, the historic heart of the city. Istanbul is known for its breathtaking mosques, and visiting them costs nothing while giving you the chance to experience their beauty, history, and spiritual significance.
Hagia Sophia
Before traveling to Istanbul, we saw so many videos claiming that Hagia Sophia now has an entrance fee, which left us a bit disappointed. However, when we arrived, we were happy to find that it’s still free to enter the mosque area! If you want to visit the museum section, there is an entrance fee, but just seeing the mosque itself was enough for us to check it off our bucket list. The interior is rich with history and tradition, making it one of the most stunning mosques we saw in Istanbul.
Blue Mosque
Just across from Hagia Sophia is the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)—another breathtaking landmark that is completely free to visit. Its intricate blue tiles, grand domes, and peaceful atmosphere make it a must-see.
If you’re looking for free things to do in Istanbul, visiting these mosques is an experience you won’t want to miss. Apart from being budget-friendly, these visits will leave you with beautiful memories of some of the most magnificent mosques in the world.
2. Visit Sultanahmet Square

As you will already be in Sultanahmet, another amazing free thing to do in Istanbul is to simply wander around Sultanahmet Square. This lively area is full of energy, with people relaxing, street vendors selling snacks, and incredible views of Istanbul’s most famous landmarks.
The square sits between the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, giving you a perfect spot to admire these historic sites from the outside for free. There are also plenty of seating areas where you can take in the vibrant atmosphere, watch the world go by, and soak in the charm of the Old City.
If you’re looking for a cheap snack, you’ll find vendors selling simit—a delicious sesame-covered bread—at an affordable price, making it a great way to enjoy a local treat while exploring. We got one with Nutella and another with cream cheese and they were both so good!
3. Wander Through The Grand And Spice Bazar

While you might be tempted to buy souvenirs, simply strolling through the Grand Bazaar is a fun and completely free experience. This historic market is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world, filled with colorful stalls, handcrafted goods, and a lively atmosphere.
When we visited, we actually didn’t buy much—except for a beautiful prayer mat, which we decided on during our second visit. That’s because we found that shopping at the Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar), located just outside the Grand Bazaar, is much more affordable! If you’re looking for budget-friendly souvenirs, Turkish delights, or traditional spices, the Spice Bazaar is the best place to go without overspending.
So, while the Grand Bazaar is a must-see for its history and atmosphere, for great deals on authentic Turkish treats and souvenirs, head to the Spice Bazaar instead!
4. Walk Across The Galata Bridge

Take in breathtaking views of the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus, and Istanbul’s iconic skyline as you walk across Galata Bridge. This might sound simple, but trust me—it’s one of the most beautiful and memorable experiences in the city, and it won’t cost you a single penny!
As you stroll along the bridge, you’ll see local fishermen lined up, casting their rods into the water—a truly iconic Istanbul sight. The mix of city lights, passing boats, and the fresh sea breeze makes this walk an unforgettable part of your trip. Whether you’re visiting during the day or at sunset, Galata Bridge offers some of the best free views in Istanbul!

5. Explore The Galata Tower Area

While entering Galata Tower requires a ticket, the surrounding area is completely free to explore! With its narrow cobblestone streets, cozy cafés, and stunning city views, this spot quickly became our favorite in Istanbul. In fact, we loved it so much that we visited it three times during our five-night stay!
The vibes here are immaculate, making it the perfect place to wander, take photos, and soak in the beauty of the city. If you want to save money instead of paying for the tower entrance, you can treat yourself to Istanbul’s famous San Sebastián cheesecake from one of the many cafés nearby. I highly recommend Viyana Kahvesi, which is right outside the Galata Tower!
During our visit, Galata Tower was actually closed, so we didn’t have the option to go inside—but honestly, just being in the area was totally worth it!
6. Taksim Square And Istiklal Avenue

This bustling, vibrant street is filled with street performers, historic buildings, cafés, and endless shops. Often referred to as the Oxford Street of Istanbul, Istiklal Street is one of the city’s most famous pedestrian avenues.
We didn’t spend a single penny here—just strolled around, soaked in the atmosphere, and enjoyed the amazing vibes. But if you’re looking for a bite to eat, there are plenty of restaurants and cafés to choose from. The only thing we spent money on? A stop at Hafiz Mustafa—a must-visit for anyone wanting to try delicious Turkish desserts! Whether you’re shopping or just people-watching, a walk down Istiklal Street is an experience in itself.
7. Stroll Through The Colourful Streets of Balat

This charming and historic neighborhood is known for its vibrant houses, hidden gems, and stunning churches. One of the highlights is the famous colorful stairs, making it a must-visit spot for photography lovers! You can find all the must-see places in Balat in my blog post on Instagrammable places in Istanbul.
The area is incredibly picturesque, offering endless opportunities for Instagram-worthy photos. We didn’t spend much here—just grabbed a fresh pomegranate juice—but if you’re looking for a bite to eat, there are plenty of adorable cafés and restaurants where you can sit and soak in the atmosphere.
8. Ortaköy Mosque And Square

Ortaköy Square is a lovely spot where you can stroll around for free and enjoy the stunning views of the Bosphorus and the iconic Bosphorus Bridge. The square is home to the beautiful Ortaköy mosque, and you can sit and relax, taking in the sights and sounds of this vibrant area.
If you’re looking for a budget-friendly lunch, you must try the kumpir stalls in Ortaköy—their kumpirs (stuffed baked potatoes) are highly recommended! There’s also a small market in the area, which is definitely worth checking out for some local goods and souvenirs. Whether you’re here for the views, the food, or the atmosphere, Ortaköy Square is a perfect place to spend a few hours without breaking the bank.
9. Visit Çamlıca Mosque and Enjoy the Views

Çamlıca Mosque is free to enter, and the museum inside is also free to visit. However, the museum was closed when we visited (we arrived around 6 pm), so if you’re planning to see it, try to go earlier in the day. The only cost you’ll incur is getting to Çamlıca Mosque, as it’s located on the Asian side in Üsküdar. But don’t worry—the ferry ride there is quite affordable, especially if you use the Istanbulkart, which I highly recommend! For more details about the Istanbulkart, check out my blog post on 15 things to know before visiting Istanbul.
In addition to the mosque, Çamlıca Hill offers stunning panoramic views of Istanbul. It’s a perfect spot to relax, enjoy the scenery, and take in the beauty of the city from above. Visiting Üsküdar and Çamlıca Mosque should definitely be on your Istanbul itinerary!
10. Explore Süleymaniye Mosque

Süleymaniye Mosque is another must-see in Istanbul. It’s free to enter, and while the inside is stunning, the beautiful exterior and surrounding area are worth admiring as well. You can take a peaceful stroll around the mosque and enjoy the serene atmosphere. It’s a great spot to relax and appreciate Istanbul’s rich history and architecture.
11. Bebek Area

Bebek is one of the most affluent and scenic areas in Istanbul, but visiting it doesn’t have to cost you a thing! This is a perfect free activity if you want to soak in some luxury vibes without spending money.

You can simply walk along the waterfront — starting from Arnavutköy Sahili and continuing to Bebek Sahili — and take in some of the most beautiful views of the Bosphorus. The area is full of charming streets, greenery, and some of the best photo spots by the water. The only cost is getting there, and it’s super affordable with the bus using your Istanbulkart.
Also, walking along the cafes was a whole vibe. We absolutely loved Bebek and the only spending we did there was grab an iced Spanish latte from Espresso Lab which I highly recommend!
12. Kuzguncuk & Çengelköy – Hidden Gems on the Asian Side

These two beautiful neighborhoods in the Üsküdar district are such underrated gems — and the best part? Visiting them is totally free (apart from your transport, which is cheap with an Istanbulkart). Take a scenic ferry ride to Üsküdar and enjoy amazing Bosphorus views along the way — it’s a whole experience on its own (FYI, doing this is cheaper than booking a full Bosphorus cruise)
In Kuzguncuk, stroll through colourful, boho-style streets filled with stunning buildings, cozy cafes, and fruit stalls. It’s a quiet, peaceful area perfect for walking around and taking in the local vibe. Then hop on a short bus ride to Çengelköy, where you can walk along the waterfront, admire the sea views, and explore cute little shops and cafes.
From Çengelköy Pier, you can even catch a ferry back to the European side — giving you more gorgeous views of the Bosphorus at sunset if you time it right. We did exactly this on our second visit to Istanbul and had the best time while spending very little — just transport and food!
This might sound like a simple itinerary for the day but trust me you will absolutely love exploring these neighbourhoods!
