Plan the perfect 6-day Istanbul itinerary with this detailed guide! Explore iconic sights, enjoy delicious food, and make the most of every moment in this beautiful city.

Planning our 6-day Istanbul itinerary was surprisingly stressful. It took ages to create a plan that allowed us to see as much as possible without constantly hopping between districts. Eventually, we realised the best way to explore Istanbul comfortably—and efficiently—was to organise our itinerary by districts.
This approach not only made our trip more enjoyable but also inspired how I structured my 17 Things to Do in Istanbul post to help others create their own itineraries. I wish more bloggers had done this when I was planning!
This 6-day Istanbul itinerary is also perfect for families travelling with kids. We took our 3-year-old daughter along and managed to see nearly everything on our list, only missing a few spots because we opted to explore other areas instead.
That’s why, in my Things to Do in Istanbul blog post, I included a list of additional places to visit—great for those planning a second trip. While 5–6 days isn’t enough to see all of Istanbul, it’s more than enough to experience its highlights and save a few gems for next time. Trust me, Istanbul is the kind of city you’ll want to visit again and again.
I hope this 6-day Istanbul itinerary makes your planning stress-free and provides the perfect structure for your adventure!

6 Day Istanbul Itinerary
Istanbul Itinerary Day 1
Arrival And Exploring Local Area

Your first day in Istanbul might not be a full day of sightseeing, but it’s still a great opportunity to settle in and get a feel for the city. If possible, book an early morning flight to maximise your time. For instance, we arrived in Istanbul around midday, reached our hotel by 3 pm, and had just enough time to unpack, freshen up, and head out to explore.
Here’s how to make the most of your arrival day:
1. Get an Istanbulkart for Easy Travel
One of the first things to do is grab an Istanbulkart—the city’s public transport card. It’s affordable, easy to use, and essential for navigating Istanbul’s extensive train and bus network. Think of it like London’s Oyster card, but even more cost-effective. You can pick one up at metro stations.
2. Explore Your Local Area
Spend your first few hours exploring the area near your accommodation. We stayed in Sisli near Karaköy, so here’s what we did—perfect if you’re staying nearby:
- Head to Taksim Square: We took a cab to Taksim and stopped at the Taksim Metro Station to buy our Istanbulkart.
- Dinner in Taksim: Enjoyed a delicious meal at Kızılkayalar, known for their famous wet burgers and mixed shawarma wraps—a must-try!
- Explore Galata (Karaköy): After dinner, we hopped on a bus to Karaköy. From there, we walked up to the Galata area, a steep but rewarding climb. The area is full of charm, with cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and the iconic Galata Tower.
- End the Day with Dessert: Treat yourself to the famous San Sebastian cheesecake at Viyana Kahvesi, a lovely café right outside the Galata Tower.
Take it easy on your first day—soak in the atmosphere, enjoy the food, and get a sense of Istanbul’s unique vibe. It’s the perfect way to ease into your adventure.
Istanbul Itinerary Day 2
Explore Sultanahmet/Fatih Area

Morning: Sultanahmet’s Iconic Mosques
- Hagia Sophia:
Begin your day at the beautiful Hagia Sophia, one of the most famous landmarks in the world. Arrive early to avoid crowds and take your time admiring the dome, Islamic calligraphy, and ancient Christian frescoes. - Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque):
Just a short walk from Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque is another must-see. Known for its striking blue tiles and six minarets, it’s a masterpiece of Ottoman design. Remember to dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) as it’s an active place of worship. They have scarves and dresses available but I recommend taking your own scarf in case they run out. - Lunch and Snacks:
After exploring the mosques, take a break and enjoy lunch at one of the local restaurants in Sultanahmet. Many offer delicious Turkish dishes such as kebabs, pide (Turkish pizza), or köfte (meatballs). I can’t remember where we ate exactly but eating around Sultanahmet is pricey.- For a quick snack, try a simit! This is a must – we got one with cream cheese and another with nutella.
Afternoon/Evening: Süleymaniye Mosque and Surroundings
- Süleymaniye Mosque:
After lunch, head to the Süleymaniye Mosque. It’s less crowded than Sultanahmet’s landmarks, providing a more peaceful atmosphere for reflection.
Istanbul Itinerary Day 3
Day of Markets, Colourful Streets, And City Vibes

Morning to Early Afternoon: Markets and Street Food
- Grand Bazaar:
Start your day by exploring the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. While it’s known for its beautiful architecture and historic charm, it can be pricey, so consider it more of a cultural experience than a shopping spree. - Spice Bazaar (Egyptian Bazaar):
You’ll find the Spice Bazaar a short walk from the Grand Bazaar. Unlike the Grand Bazaar, prices here are more reasonable, and you’ll find an array of spices, teas, dried fruits, and Turkish delights. It’s the perfect spot to pick up affordable souvenirs or treats to take home. - Lunch:
For lunch, head to a nearby fish stall that serves the best fish wrap you’ll ever try. While we tasted a few in other areas, this one stood out for its freshness and flavour—an absolute must if you’re a seafood lover.

Late Afternoon: Exploring the Balat Area
- Balat:
After lunch, make your way to the Balat neighbourhood, known for its colourful houses, quaint streets, and unique charm.- Grab a fresh pomegranate juice from a street vendor—it’s refreshing and perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up.
- Explore the area’s mix of cafés, boutique shops, and the famous Rainbow Row of Houses! Check out my blog post on 7 Top Instagrammable Spots in Istanbul to find all the cute spots you need to visit in Balat!
Evening: Taksim Square and Istiklal Street
- Taksim Square and Istiklal Street:
End your day in Taksim Square, the heart of modern Istanbul. From here, explore Istiklal Street, often referred to as the “Oxford Street of Istanbul.” Lined with shops, boutiques, restaurants, and street performers. - Dessert at Hafiz Mustafa:
Wrap up your evening with dessert at the iconic Hafiz Mustafa, known for its exquisite Turkish delights, baklava, and a wide range of traditional desserts. It’s a must-visit for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Istanbul Itinerary Day 4
Exploring Ortaköy, Kadıköy, and the Vibrant Galata Nightlife

Morning: Ortaköy and the Bosphorus Views
Start your day in Ortaköy, one of the most picturesque neighbourhoods in Istanbul. Located along the Bosphorus, it offers stunning views of the Ortaköy Mosque against the backdrop of the iconic Bosphorus Bridge. It’s a perfect spot for photos, so make sure to snap a few shots of the mosque and the bridge, especially in the soft morning light.
- Take time to visit the inside of Ortaköy Mosque.
- Enjoy a stroll along the waterfront, where you’ll find a variety of cafés, local food stalls, and souvenir shops. You might even want to try a simit or kumpir (stuffed baked potatoes) from one of the street vendors. You’ll find a line of Kumpir vendors, all calling you to try their kumpir! We really regret not grabbing one.
Afternoon: A Boat Ride to Kadıköy and Exploring the Asian Side
Next, hop on a ferry to Kadıköy, located on Istanbul’s Asian side. The boat ride across the Bosphorus provides spectacular views of the city, giving you a unique perspective of Istanbul’s skyline.
Once in Kadıköy, it’s time to explore the area:
- Kadıköy Market: Known for its lively vibe and diverse offerings, Kadıköy’s market is a great place to wander through.
- Moda Street: Similar to Istiklal Street, this lively pedestrian street is full of cafés, boutique shops, and charming eateries. Kadıköy offers a nice contrast to the European side’s bustle, with a laid-back vibe perfect for a leisurely afternoon.
Evening: Galata Area and Dessert at Viyana
In the evening, head back to the European side and visit the Galata area, which comes alive at night.
- Take a walk along the Galata Bridge, where you can watch the sunset over the Bosphorus and enjoy the lively atmosphere.
- If you’re in the mood for some nightlife, you’ll find plenty of options in Galata, from trendy bars to local taverns.
For dessert, make your way to Viyana Kahvesi in Karaköy (just outside the Galata Tower)—a place we couldn’t resist after discovering their San Sebastian cheesecake. Trust us, it’s worth the visit. We found ourselves coming back for more during the trip!
Istanbul Itinerary Day 5
Bosphorus Tour And Üsküdar

Morning: Bosphorus Tour
Start your day with a Bosphorus tour to get a fresh perspective of Istanbul’s iconic skyline. We got our tickets from the Eminonu Pier. The tour takes you along the Bosphorus Strait, passing stunning palaces, Ottoman mansions, and bridges.
This is the perfect way to relax and take in the sights while learning about the history of the city. The boat ride offers great views of both the European and Asian sides, allowing you to see Istanbul from the water—a truly unforgettable experience.
Afternoon/Evening: Exploring Üsküdar and Camlica Hill
After the tour, we made our way to Üsküdar, a quieter, more residential district on Istanbul’s Asian side. Known for its historical mosques and scenic views, Üsküdar offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the European side.
- Visit the Palace:
Explore the Beylerbeyi Palace, located on the Bosphorus shores. This beautiful palace was once used by Ottoman sultans, and its stunning architecture and serene gardens are well worth a visit. It costs about £9-11 per person for entrance. - Golden Hour at Camlica Mosque:
As the afternoon fades into the evening, head to Camlica Mosque, one of the largest and most beautiful mosques in Istanbul. Visiting during golden hour is a perfect way to witness the mosque’s beauty as the soft light of sunset casts a magical glow over the area. - Dinner at Yunus Balık:
After a peaceful afternoon, we took the boat back to Karaköy and enjoyed dinner at Yunus Balık, a popular seafood restaurant located under the Galata Bridge. The restaurant is part of a row of fish restaurants along the bridge, and we loved the variety of fresh seafood options. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration.
Istanbul Itinerary Day 6
Last Minute Shopping And Visiting Favourite Spots

Your final day in Istanbul is all about making the most of your remaining time. Whether you want to pick up a few last-minute souvenirs, revisit your favourite places, or see any spots you may have missed, this day ensures you leave Istanbul with lasting memories.
Below is what we did on our last day if you would like some inspiration! We do regret not exploring other places on our list but we did need to wrap up early to have an early night for our early morning flight!
Morning: Shopping at the Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar
Start your last day by heading back to Sultanahmet for some final shopping.
- Grand Bazaar: If you didn’t manage to pick up everything you wanted earlier in the trip, this is your chance to return. We grabbed a beautiful prayer mat as a souvenir—perfect for a unique memory from the trip. The Grand Bazaar is also a great place to pick up spices, scarves, and other traditional Turkish items.
- Spice Bazaar: After the Grand Bazaar, walk over to the nearby Spice Bazaar (also known as the Egyptian Bazaar). We couldn’t resist getting a few more Turkish delights to take home as gifts. You’ll find a wide variety of sweets, nuts, and spices here that make for great souvenirs or treats to enjoy back home.
Lunch: Delicious Ekmek and Ayran
We then ventured to a place famous for its delicious meat dishes. Expect a long queue—this spot is popular for a reason! The restaurant was called Sultanahmet Koftecisi located in sultanahment
- We had an ekmek (a Turkish sandwich) filled with flavourful meat and paired it with a refreshing glass of ayran (a traditional Turkish yogurt drink). It was the perfect lunch, simple but delicious, and gave us the energy to finish our day on a high note.
Afternoon: Packing and Final Moments
After lunch, it was time to head back to the hotel and start packing. Depending on your flight time, you might have a bit of extra time to revisit your favourite spots or relax before heading to the airport. We took a final stroll around the neighbourhood, soaking in the sights and sounds of Istanbul one last time.
