If you love chocolate cake then you need to try this chocolate date cake made with Medjool dates and no added sugar. An easy, healthy dessert that’s rich and fudgy you’ll make on repeat!
Dates are hands down my favourite snack, especially Medjool dates. I love experimenting with them in baked goods and turning them into simple snacks — from date smoothies to date bark. I recently made chocolate chip date muffins, and they turned out so good that we were happily enjoying muffins for dessert, completely guilt-free.
After seeing how incredible those muffins were with just six ingredients, I knew I had to try a chocolate date cake… and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. This cake is a delicious way to add extra fibre (thanks to the dates) while keeping things simple. There’s no added sugar, just the natural sweetness of Medjool dates, making it a healthier alternative to traditional chocolate cake.
If you’ve been wanting to make healthier dessert choices where you have full control over the ingredients, this moist chocolate date cake recipe is exactly what you need. It’s quick, easy, and tastes absolutely amazing — your guests or family won’t even guess it’s a no sugar chocolate date cake made with dates.

Easy Chocolate Date Cake
Ingredients Needed
- Medjool dates
- Warm milk (full-fat)
- Plain flour
- Baking soda
- Baking powder
- Cocoa powder
- Eggs
- Chocolate chips or chocolate chunks
How To Make This Delicious Chocolate Date Cake Recipe
- Remove the pits from the dates and place them in a deep bowl. Pour the warm milk over the dates and let them soak for 20 minutes to soften.

- After 20 minutes, add the soaked dates and milk to a blender and blend until completely smooth.
- Pour the mixture into a mixing bowl, add the remaining ingredients, and mix until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.

- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- Lightly grease a loaf pan or line it with non-stick baking paper. Pour the batter into the pan, gently spread it out evenly, and tap the pan on the worktop to remove any air bubbles. Sprinkle extra chocolate chips on top if desired.

- Bake for 30–35 minutes. Check at 30 minutes by inserting a skewer — it should come out mostly clean. A little melted chocolate is fine, but there should be no raw batter. Avoid overbaking, as this can dry the cake out. I did a total of 33 minutes.
- Allow the cake to cool for 10–15 minutes before slicing and enjoying.

How To Store Your Date Cake
You can store this chocolate date cake in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Before enjoying, simply pop a slice in the microwave for 20–30 seconds so it’s warm, soft, and extra delicious.
This cake also freezes really well. Slice it first, then wrap each slice individually and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. When ready to eat, let it thaw at room temperature and then place in the microwave to warm up!
