Best Hotel In Tangier, Morocco
Hotel Overview

We stayed at Occidental Hotel Tanger, located in the Malabata area—one of the best places to stay in the city, whether it’s your first time visiting or not. It’s just steps away from Tangier Beach (also known as Malabata Beach) and surrounded by plenty of great restaurants, making it super convenient for exploring and relaxing.
This is a new, modern hotel that strikes the perfect balance between affordability and a touch of luxury. It’s ideal for families, couples, solo travellers, or anyone who wants a stylish and comfortable stay without overspending.
One of the best things about the location is how well-connected it is. You’re just a short drive away from the medina and most of Tangier’s main attractions, but far enough to enjoy a quieter, more laid-back vibe when you return to the hotel. It really is the perfect base for discovering everything Tangier has to offer.

What We Loved About This Hotel
Location:

At first, we considered booking the popular Hilton Al Houara, which is stunning and definitely worth staying at—but probably better suited for a second or third trip to Tangier. Many first-time visitors (ourselves almost included!) make the mistake of staying in hotels that are far from the city centre, which means long and expensive taxi rides to most attractions on your itinerary.
That’s why we were so glad we found Occidental Hotel Tanger. It’s in Malabata, a great area close to everything you’d want to see, but not inside the busy medina or tourist hotspots—so it’s far more affordable without sacrificing convenience.
From the hotel, we were just a short drive to the Tangier medina, Kasbah, and other main sights. Plus, it’s only about a 3–5 minute drive from Malabata Beach, Tangier Beach, and Municipale Beach (which are all connected along one long stretch of coast, just with different names). There were also loads of nearby restaurants and dessert spots—perfect when we wanted a relaxed evening out or a spontaneous late-night treat.
The location truly made our trip easier and more enjoyable, especially since we were travelling with family. It was quiet enough to rest, but close enough to everything we wanted to explore.
Rooms And Comfort

We were pleasantly surprised by the room—it was even better than we expected! It was modern, clean, and comfortable, with a large, cosy bed and a spotless shower.
One thing to note: the sink was outside the bathroom, which is becoming more common in newer hotels. We didn’t mind it at all, but if you’re expecting a traditional layout, it’s something to be aware of. Some upgraded rooms might have a more conventional setup.

There was a handheld bidet spray in the toilet (which we always appreciate), a wardrobe with decent storage, and even a safe for valuables. The wardrobe space was generous compared to many hotels we’ve stayed in, which really helped us stay organised.
Housekeeping was consistent and thorough. They cleaned the room daily (as long as we placed the sign on the door), and they were happy to change towels and bed sheets daily if we followed the instructions—just leave the towels on the bed and place the provided card on the sheets. Every evening we returned to a fresh, tidy room that smelled great, which was a lovely touch after long days out.
Breakfast And Food

We included breakfast in our booking, and overall we were happy with it. The food was fresh and tasted good, with traditional Moroccan rghaif/msemen, other pastries, bread, olives, fruits, and a live omelette station (our personal must-have when staying in hotels!).
The only downside is that the breakfast was a bit repetitive and didn’t offer a huge variety—but that wasn’t an issue for us. We usually stick to the same breakfast anyway, and this setup suited us fine. However, if you’re someone who likes a wide range of options, you might consider not including breakfast in your package and trying out nearby cafés instead.
The hotel also has a restaurant if you’d prefer to dine in, but personally, I’d recommend eating out—Tangier has so many food spots, and hotel dining can be a bit pricey.
Facilities

Occidental Tanger isn’t packed with facilities, but it has exactly what you need for a comfortable stay. The outdoor pool is a decent size—perfect for a relaxed morning or a cool dip in the afternoon. It’s surrounded by sun loungers, umbrellas, and even has towels provided, plus an outdoor shower and toilets nearby.

Right next to the pool is the hotel gym, which overlooks the pool area. It’s small but functional, ideal if you want to squeeze in a quick workout.
Staff And Service
The staff were genuinely one of the highlights of our stay. Everyone—from the reception team and housekeeping to the kitchen staff and security—was incredibly kind, warm, and helpful.
Check-in and check-out were both seamless, and on our second day, we asked if it was possible to move my mother-in-law’s room closer to ours. She was originally on the third floor while we were on the second. The staff checked immediately and told us another room would be available next to ours by 2 PM—and they kept their word. It was sorted quickly and with no fuss, which we really appreciated (no fee for room change).
The team went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and happy. From carrying our luggage to offering local tips, their hospitality really made a difference and made our stay feel special.
Best Hotel In Tangier But Here Are A Few Things To Keep In Mind
The Gym Could Be Better
The hotel does have a gym, but it’s quite limited in terms of equipment—just a couple of bikes and two treadmills when we visited. A lifeguard by the pool mentioned they plan to add weights and more equipment soon, so if you’re visiting in the near future, it might be better equipped by then.
No Luggage Scales
Most hotels we’ve stayed at either have a luggage scale at reception or one you can borrow to weigh your bags before heading to the airport. This hotel didn’t have one, which can be a bit stressful—especially if you’ve bought souvenirs or local goods and want to make sure your suitcase meets airline weight limits. Just something to keep in mind if you tend to pack heavy!
Water Bottles Are Only Free On Day One
You’ll find complimentary water bottles in your room when you check in, but after that, any extra bottles must be requested—and paid for. To get around this, we picked up a few cold water bottles each evening from local shops and stored them in the fridge. That way we had cold water at night, in the morning for breakfast, and to take with us during the day.
Fridge Wasn’t Very Cold
Speaking of water… the mini fridge in our room wasn’t particularly cold. It kept things slightly cool but definitely not chilled, which wasn’t ideal in the Tangier heat. We’re not sure if this was just in our room or all rooms, but it’s something to be aware of.
