A few weeks ago, I shared a post on how to achieve healthy, glowing skin from the inside out, focusing on nourishing your skin through proper nutrition and hydration. If you haven’t had a chance to read it, I highly recommend checking it out for valuable insights. Click HERE for the blog post.
Now that summer is here, it’s time to shift our focus to the external factors that can impact our skin. The sun’s powerful rays and increased outdoor activities bring new challenges to our skincare routines. In this blog post, I will go into the best summer skincare practices, highlighting the importance of protecting and nourishing your skin during this sunny season.
Summer is a time for fun in the sun, but it’s crucial to remember that our skin needs extra care and attention. The sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause significant damage, leading to premature aging, sunburns, and even skin cancer. That’s why incorporating proper sun protection measures into your skincare routine is non-negotiable.
One of the key summer skincare essentials is sunscreen, to protect our skin from UVA and UVB rays. Alongside sun protection, it’s important to adapt your skincare routine to the summer months. Lightweight moisturizers, gentle cleansers, and exfoliants are your best friends during this season.
Remember, the first step to achieving beautiful skin starts with taking care of it from within, and now, let’s focus on how to safeguard and nourish it on the outside as well. So, let’s get into the secrets to radiant summer skin!
This post is all about summer skincare to help protect and nourish your skin.

Best Summer Skincare Tips
1. Protect Your Skin From The Sun
One of the key summer skincare essentials is sunscreen. Choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher will shield your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. This step is so important to add to your summer skincare routine as the sun’s UV radiation can cause significant damage, leading to premature aging, sunburns, and even skin cancer.
Remember to apply it generously and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or sweating. This simple step can go a long way in preserving your skin’s health and youthful appearance. Below I have linked a few of my Suncare products that I absolutely love!
Supergood glow screen:
Not only will this protect your skin, but it will also give you the most insane glow! I love not wearing makeup in the summer so a good glow is essential and this sunscreen does exactly that. Also, if you do decide to wear makeup, this sunscreen adds an extra glow to your makeup which is perfect for a summer makeup look.
Garnier Ideal Bronze SPF 30:
This is the perfect tan-enhancing protection oil to protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays as well as allow your skin to tan.
Garnier over makeup SPF spray:
This is perfect if you wear makeup and need to reapply your SPF, which you should do every 2 hours. You can spray it over your makeup without it ruining it. Even if I do not wear makeup, I always keep this with me because if my hands are unclean, which they usually are when I am out, all I have to do is spray instead of rubbing it on my face. This way I am keeping harmful bacteria away from my skin.
2. Lips Need Protecting Too
How many of you forget to protect your lips or even know that your lips also need protection from harmful UV rays? It is such a common area that is forgotten. Lips are often exposed to the sun more frequently than other areas of the body. Whether it’s due to talking, eating, or drinking, our lips are constantly exposed to UV rays, making them more prone to sun damage.
The skin on our lips is much thinner compared to the skin on the rest of our bodies. This makes them more vulnerable to the damaging effects of the sun’s UV rays. Prolonged sun exposure without protection can lead to premature aging of the lips. Over time, the sun’s UV rays can contribute to the formation of fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots on the lips, diminishing their natural beauty.
Apply a lip balm with SPF to protect your lips from sun damage. Look for formulations that provide both sun protection and hydration. I have linked a few below for you that does exactly that and vary in price depending on your budget.
3. Exfoliate Regularly
Exfoliation helps remove the buildup of dead skin cells on the surface of your skin. During the summer, your skin may produce more oil and sweat, which can contribute to clogged pores and dull-looking skin. Regular exfoliation helps to unclog pores, promote cell turnover, and reveal fresh, vibrant skin underneath.
The removal of dead skin cells also allows your skincare products to penetrate more effectively. This means that the moisturisers, serums, and sunscreens you apply to your skin will be better absorbed and can provide optimal benefits.
One of my favourite exfoliating face wash, which is not only suitable for sensitive skin but also makes my skin so soft is the Fresh sugar strawberry exfoliating face wash. I bought the small version about 2 months ago and I definitely will be getting the bigger bottle once it runs out. Make sure to exfoliate your skin at least 2-3 times a week. The Fresh Exfoliator is suitable for everyday exfoliation but doing it 2-3 times a week is enough.
4. Use A Light Moisturiser
During the summer, heavy or oily moisturisers can feel uncomfortable on the skin and may contribute to clogged pores or breakouts. Opting for a light moisturiser with a gel or lotion consistency allows for quick absorption and a non-greasy finish. It provides the necessary hydration without weighing down your skin, allowing it to breathe and preventing excess oil production.
It is also important to remember to moisturise your skin because, despite the warm weather, the summer season can still dehydrate your skin due to factors such as increased sun exposure, heat, and air conditioning. Applying a light moisturizer helps maintain the optimal moisture balance in your skin, preventing it from becoming dry and dull. Also, while sunscreen is crucial for protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, it can sometimes be drying.
I love the intense moisturiser by Caudalie. However, in the summer I will be using the light version which is what is needed during the summer. If you have sensitive skin like I do, then I can’t recommend Caudalie enough!
5. Wear Lightweight, Breathable Clothing
When we think about skincare, we usually always think about our faces. However, looking after our skin also includes our body. Wearing lightweight and breathable clothing in the summer can help protect your skin as it helps prevent sweat and irritation, especially in areas prone to friction.
So, choose loose-fitting, lightweight fabrics like cotton and linen to allow your skin to breathe. Check out my LikeToKnowIt, especially this post as I have linked a few linen and cotton pieces that are essential to your summer capsule wardrobe.
6. Wear Sunglasses
Wearing sunglasses not only protects your eyes but also helps safeguard the delicate skin around the eyes. This area is particularly prone to sun damage, including sunburn, fine lines, and discoloration. By covering your eyes with sunglasses, you create an additional layer of defense against UV radiation, helping to maintain the healthy and youthful appearance of the skin around your eyes.
7. Use Makeup With SPF
If you like to wear makeup in the summer, then using makeup with SPF can be a beneficial addition to your skincare routine. While sunscreen is crucial for protecting your skin from harmful UV rays, some people may find it challenging to reapply sunscreen throughout the day, especially when wearing makeup. Makeup products with added SPF provide an extra layer of protection against UV radiation, helping to further shield your skin from sun damage.
One of my favourite makeup brands that have SPF 50 that I personally can recommend is the IT cosmetics CC cream. This not only provides protection against UV rays but also is perfect for those with dry skin and gives amazing coverage that doesn’t look or feel heavy – perfect for the summer!
As you enjoy the sun-filled days of summer, don’t forget to prioritize your skin’s health and well-being. By following these essential summer skincare tips, you can nourish and protect your skin, ensuring a radiant and healthy complexion throughout the season.
