Where To Stay In Istanbul For First Timers
Sultanahmet Or Beyoğlu?

One of the most common questions travelers ask before visiting Istanbul is: “Sultanahmet or Beyoğlu?” The answer often depends on your travel preferences, but many first-time visitors are recommended to stay in Sultanahmet for its iconic charm.
Below is a summary of each area to help you determine which area would be the right fit for you, before going into the pros and cons.
Sultanahmet
Sultanahmet is the heart of Istanbul’s rich history and culture. It’s home to world-famous landmarks like the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Topkapi Palace, and the Grand Bazaar. Staying here immerses you in the city’s historical essence, with cobblestone streets, Ottoman-era architecture, and a quieter, more traditional atmosphere. You’ll also be close to the Balat area, known for its colorful houses and hipster cafes.
Beyoğlu
On the other hand, Beyoğlu offers a more modern and vibrant vibe. Located on the European side of Istanbul, this district is the city’s entertainment and cultural hub. It includes areas like Taksim Square and the Galata Tower, alongside bustling streets filled with shops, cafes, and nightlife. Beyoğlu is also home to some of Istanbul’s best shopping centers, making it a favorite for those seeking a more contemporary urban experience.
Pros And Cons Of Both Districts
To help you decide where to stay in Istanbul as a first-time visitor, let’s break down the pros and cons of each area. These factors helped us make our own decisions before our trip.
Sultanahmet
Pros:
- Proximity to major historical landmarks like the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace — perfect for sightseeing.
- A quieter and more traditional vibe, ideal for those who want to experience Istanbul’s old-world charm.
- Plenty of boutique hotels with stunning views of the Bosphorus or iconic landmarks.
- Walking distance to popular attractions, saving time on transportation.
Cons:
- Limited nightlife and dining options compared to Beyoğlu.
- It can feel overly touristy at times, especially during peak seasons.
- Shops and restaurants here are often more expensive than elsewhere in the city.
Beyoğlu
Pros:
- A vibrant and modern atmosphere with plenty of trendy cafes, restaurants, and nightlife.
- Close to Taksim Square, Istiklal Street, and the Galata Tower are bustling activity hubs.
- Great for shopping, with numerous malls and local boutiques.
- A central location that makes it easy to explore other parts of the city via public transport e.g. getting a ferry to the Asian side
Cons:
- Busier and noisier, which may not suit travelers seeking a more relaxed vibe. But if you want to stay near Beyoglu then I recommend Sisli which would be much quieter – this is where we stayed (check the hotel recommendation below)
- Further from the main historical sites, requiring longer transit times.
- Accommodation options are more varied but can sometimes lack the charm of Sultanahmet’s boutique hotels.
Ultimately, choosing between Sultanahmet and Beyoğlu comes down to what kind of experience you’re looking for. Both areas have unique strengths, and knowing the pros and cons can help you pick what suits your travel style best.
My Opinion On The Best Area To Stay In Istanbul

We decided to stay in Şişli near Beyoğlu for our trip to Istanbul due to budget constraints. Staying in Şişli turned out to be a great decision for us as it was much more affordable, yet it was still very easy to reach key areas like Galata, Karaköy, and Taksim Square via a quick bus ride.
We knew that during our six-night stay, we’d only need about two days to explore the Fatih area (Sultanahmet), and that’s exactly how it played out. We spent around 1.5 days exploring Sultanahmet and its surrounding landmarks, and the other half of the second day in Beyoğlu.
After that, most of our time was spent around Galata, exploring Taksim, Istiklal Street, and the Galata Tower. The central location of Beyoğlu made it incredibly convenient to move from one place to another, which was especially important for us as we were traveling with our toddler in a pram. Easy access and short travel times made a huge difference for us.
We also found it simple to visit the Asian side of Istanbul from Beyoğlu. After being dropped off from a ferry, it was just a short ride back to our hotel, which added to the convenience factor.
When deciding where to stay, I came across a local’s recommendation on TikTok, and they also suggested Beyoğlu for first-time visitors. They couldn’t have been more right! The area truly offers a great balance of modernity, accessibility, and vibrancy.
I would personally recommend staying around Beyoğlu. Even if you’re on a budget, staying slightly further up in Şişli like we did is still a great option because of how well-connected it is. However, the ultimate decision depends on your preferences and travel style, which is why I’ve listed the pros and cons above to help you choose what suits you best.

Budget-Friendly Hotel Recommendation
After much searching for a hotel that ticked all the boxes—especially in terms of location—we chose Ramada Encore by Wyndham Istanbul Şişli, and it was an excellent decision!
We were initially drawn in by the beautiful photos on show on the website but worried it might not live up to expectations. Thankfully, it did—and more.
Exceptional Customer Service
The staff at the front desk were incredibly kind and welcoming. One standout team member, Ali, went above and beyond to accommodate us. He answered all our questions and checked in with us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed, which truly elevated our stay.
Comfortable and Quiet Rooms

Our room was spacious, spotlessly clean, and incredibly comfortable. I have to mention the bed—it was easily one of the comfiest I’ve ever slept in! I had some of my best nights of sleep in Istanbul. While some say staying in Beyoğlu can be noisy, this hotel’s location, further up in a quieter area, was perfect—especially since we were traveling with a toddler.
Delicious Breakfast

We booked a package that included breakfast, and it was a daily highlight. The dining area was modern, spotless, and welcoming. The breakfast spread was not only delicious but exceeded our expectations. Booking.com reviews had praised it, but we didn’t realize just how good it would be. There was a great variety of options, and while the staples remained consistent, they switched up a few items each day to keep it fresh.
Convenient Location

For us, using public transport was a priority because it’s affordable and makes getting to Istanbul’s main attractions so simple. This hotel was ideal, with a bus stop just a 7-minute walk away. Buses from there easily took us to Karaköy (near Galata) and Eminönü (in Fatih). The short walk to the bus stop was enjoyable, as it passed by local shops and gave us a glimpse into everyday life in Istanbul.
Bonus: Fitness Facilities
For those wanting to stick to a workout routine, the hotel has a gym. While I didn’t use it (the steep hills of Istanbul gave me all the exercise I needed!), it’s a great feature for fitness enthusiasts.
Overall, our stay at Ramada Encore by Wyndham Istanbul Şişli was fantastic. From the quiet location to the comfortable rooms and amazing breakfast, it was a perfect base for exploring Istanbul. Highly recommended!
