Period Self Care Ideas
Physical Self Care During Periods
1. Hydration & Nutrition
Hydration and nutrition are essential self-care practices during your period (at any phase really, but something you should pay attention to a lot whilst on your period). Staying hydrated helps reduce bloating and fatigue, which many women experience during this time. I recommend keeping a reusable water bottle with you as a reminder to drink water regularly. If you struggle with water intake, check out my blog on how to increase hydration.
Cravings can hit hard during your period (and even during the luteal phase, 1-2 weeks before), but it’s important to focus on nourishing your body with anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and foods rich in magnesium. These can help ease cramps and support your overall well-being.
If you’re craving chocolate, go ahead and enjoy it! Indulging mindfully is a form of self-care too. However, try to balance your blood sugar as much as possible to reduce sugar cravings. This is especially important if you feel like your sugar cravings are the highest during this phase of your cycle

2. Gentle Exercise
On my Instagram, I often get asked about the best type of exercise to do during your period. Many people find it challenging to stay consistent with their workout routine during this time, and it can feel like they’re losing momentum.
The truth is, during your period, self-care should focus on rest and gentle movement. Exercises like walking, yoga, and stretching are ideal—they help alleviate cramps and boost your mood. It’s important to note that intense workouts during your period can be counterproductive. They can raise cortisol (stress hormone) levels and lead to hormonal imbalances. That’s why it’s best to keep things gentle during this phase. Here’s an example of my routine:
- Day 1-2: 10-minute stretch
- Day 3-4: 15-minute menstrual pilates
- Day 5-7: 10-15 minutes of low-impact exercises like walking or dance workouts as my energy starts to slowly return
Remember, listening to your body and allowing yourself to slow down is key to maintaining balance during your period.
3. Heat Therapy
Whether you experience abdominal cramps, lower back pain, or both, this period self-care idea is one of my absolute favorites! Personally, I rely on the Nomisk heating pad to soothe my lower back, as I often experience lower back pains both during my period and in the luteal phase. After just 30 minutes of massage and heat therapy, it works wonders!
If you’re not looking to invest in a heating pad, don’t worry—a warm bath or shower, or even a hot water bottle, can be just as effective. Set the mood with some calming candles, cozy up with your heat therapy, and relax while watching your favorite show or movie. It’s the perfect way to unwind and relieve those period aches.
How To Feel Better Emotionally On Your Period
4. Mindfulness And Relaxation
Taking care of your mental and emotional well-being is incredibly important during your period, as this is often when we feel our lowest. Hormonal shifts can lead to mood swings, anxiety, and stress, making it essential to prioritize self-care for your mind. Engaging in mindfulness activities (link) and relaxation techniques can significantly reduce stress and bring a sense of calm during this time.
Here are some mindfulness self-care ideas for your period:
- Coloring: Grab a coloring book or print some calming designs to focus your mind and relax.
- Deep Breathing: Practice a simple 5-minute guided meditation to ease stress and calm your thoughts. Deep breathing helps to regulate your mood and gives you a moment to reset.
- Journaling: Reflect on your emotions or set gentle intentions for how you want to care for yourself during this time.
- Gratitude Practice: Take a few minutes to write down three things you’re grateful for today—this can shift your focus and boost your mood.
These mindfulness activities not only calm your mind but can also help you reconnect with your body, giving you the emotional support you need to feel more balanced during your cycle.
5. Journaling
Journaling is a powerful way to process your emotions, especially during your period when mood swings and stress can be more intense. Writing down your thoughts and feelings can help you gain emotional clarity, making it easier to understand and cope with the ups and downs.
During your period, it’s important to be gentle with yourself, and journaling can be a tool for practicing self-compassion.
Journaling Prompts for Self-Compassion and Body Awareness:
- How do I feel in my body today, and what can I do to support it?
- What are three ways I can show myself kindness during this time?
- What is one positive thing I appreciate about my body right now?
- What intention can I set for how I want to navigate this period physically and emotionally?
- What emotions am I feeling today, and how can I take care of myself through them?

6. Pampering Session
Adding a pampering session to your period self-care routine is a great way to nurture your mental health during this time. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated—just doing something that makes you feel good can make a big difference. Whether it’s indulging in a relaxing skincare routine or curling up with your favorite snacks and a movie, pampering yourself can bring a sense of comfort and ease.
Whatever your favourite activity may be, making time for a pampering day during your period can help regulate your mental and emotional well-being. It’s a simple but effective way to show yourself some extra love when you need it most.

Rest And Sleep
7. Resting As Much As Possible
During your period, your body works hard to manage hormonal changes, which can leave you feeling more tired than usual. Prioritizing rest and sleep is essential to allow your body to recover and recharge. Getting enough sleep can help reduce symptoms like fatigue, irritability, and cramps, making it easier to manage your day.
To improve your sleep quality during menstruation, consider creating a relaxing bedtime routine. This might include activities like taking a warm bath, practicing deep breathing exercises, or reading a book to wind down.
Reducing screen time before bed can also help improve your ability to fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper rest. Listen to your body, and don’t hesitate to take naps or slow down if you feel drained—this is your time to rest and recover.
8. Comfortable Sleep Environment
A comfortable sleep environment is key to getting the rest you need during your period. Start by making small adjustments to enhance comfort. Use supportive pillows to cushion your body, especially around your abdomen and lower back, where cramps often occur.
I also find having a white noise machine helps me sleep so much better especially during this phase of my cycle. So if you find it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep then a white noise machine can really help!
