Ingredients Needed To Make This Shakshuka Recipe
- Ripe Vine Tomatoes: Opt for red ones to ensure a rich, non-bitter sauce.
- Red Pepper: Feel free to mix in some green peppers if you wish.
- White Onion
- Garlic: Use fresh cloves or opt for convenience with garlic granules (I used garlic granules).
- Tomato Puree (Tomato Paste)
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil: Please do not use any other oil, especially seed oils. The olive oil is not only healthy but adds flavour to the dish.
- Spices: Salt, turmeric, paprika, cumin, ground ginger, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
- Fresh Coriander (or Parsley or both)
- Eggs
- Feta Cheese (Optional): Elevate your shakshuka with a creamy, tangy kick—optional, but highly recommend!
How To Make Shakshuka
- Start by gathering your ingredients and dicing up the tomatoes, onions, and peppers. If you’re going for fresh garlic, finely chop it.
- Heat a deep skillet over medium heat. Once it’s just warm, add the olive oil and toss in the tomato paste (puree). Saute the tomato paste for 2 minutes, then toss in the onions. Cook them up for another 2-3 minutes until they’re soft. If you are going to be using fresh garlic (about 2-3 cloves) you would add it in with the onions.
- Add in the diced tomatoes and peppers, giving it a good mix. Let this cook for 7-10 minutes (or until soft), ensuring you stir occasionally to prevent any sticking.
- Once your tomatoes and peppers become soft, add some hot water and mix. The amount of water is your call, depending on how saucy you fancy it. I usually go for about ½ cup depending on how many people I am making it for. Add in the spices and mix. Then toss in the chopped coriander and mix it again.
- Let it simmer for at least 4 minutes or until it starts bubbling. Stir occasionally to blend those flavours. Then, crack in the eggs gently, cover them, and let them cook for 5-10 minutes. Adjust the time based on whether you want that yolk runny or hard.
- Once cooked, serve on a plate and crumble some feta cheese if you wish.
- Enjoy!
What Can I Serve Shakshuka With?
Shakshuka can be served in many ways. Traditionally it is served with bread but here are a few ways you can serve your shakshuka dish:

- Rice

- Cheese: Sprinkle crumbled feta or any other cheese you prefer.

Hi!
We just (just) made this and it was wonderful!
We had a small logistical error; we bought mint and parsley rather than coriander. We compared other recipes and settled on yours but somehow the mint and parsley snuck in from another recipe. Perhaps these are regional differences?
We did have ground coriander and added 1/2 tsp as per cumin (total guess).
We also halved the recipe for 3 eggs and it was perfect for two!
You also inspired up to buy some tomato paste in a tube for smaller amounts instead of opening a 5oz can of tomato paste. Every day is a school day.

I am so pleased you enjoyed it!
Usually, both parsley and coriander would be used. But I always just have coriander at home so I only used coriander. I have never used mint before but it sounds like it came out amazing! I am so happy to hear.
Thank you so much for your comment! It means the world.
