Benefits Of Gratitude
What Is Gratitude?
Gratitude is a heartfelt acknowledgment of the good things in your life. Being grateful and practicing gratitude is when you recognize and express thanks for the positive experiences, people, and aspects that bring you joy and fulfillment.
How Gratitude Turned My Mental Health Around
After welcoming my little girl, I found myself going through postpartum depression. Days were filled with unhappiness, stress, and anxiety, and adapting to the changes that came with motherhood seemed overwhelming. In the midst of it all, I struggled to connect with my daughter, despite loving her deeply. Daily tears, sleepless nights, and a sense of isolation became my routine, even with a supportive husband by my side.
Realizing that my depression was taking a toll on me, both physically and mentally, I knew I needed a change. That’s when I stumbled upon a gratitude journal. Despite initial skepticism, I decided to give it a shot. It took a few entries, but gradually, daily gratitude practice began to work its magic. It not only lifted me out of depression but also made me appreciate the small joys in life that often go unnoticed.
During my most anxious moments, those 5 minutes of morning gratitude became a lifeline, a reminder throughout the day that there’s so much to be thankful for, even when things seem tough. Overall, gratitude shifted my mindset from negative to positive. I started appreciating my family more, stressing less, and finding strength on the toughest days. Once you start jotting down a few things you’re grateful for each day, the practice naturally extends to your entire day. Facing a challenge becomes easier when you constantly remind yourself of the abundance of things to be grateful for.
How To Practice Gratitude Daily
There are simple and varied ways to bring gratitude into your daily routine. One effective method is keeping a gratitude journal. Putting your feelings on paper not only expresses gratitude but also fosters mindfulness.
Another approach is through prayer. Start your day by thanking God for waking you up in good health, for your family, and friends, and for all the blessings in your life.
Sending thank-you messages is a quick yet meaningful way to practice gratitude.
Now, let me share a few ways you can make practicing gratitude sustainable and enjoyable:
Consistency Over Quantity:
- You don’t need to write pages. A few sentences or even three bullet points can capture your gratitude. It takes less than 5 minutes in the morning, making it manageable and easy to stick to. Even on busy days, you can silently express gratitude in your thoughts.
Incorporate Gratitude into Your Routine:
- Add gratitude to your morning and night routines for consistency. For instance, start your day with a 5-minute gratitude session before reaching for your phone. Make it part of a 30-minute morning routine that includes stretching, skincare, and a healthy breakfast.
- For a quick night routine, spend 3-5 minutes on gratitude just before sleep. Reflect on positive moments, even on challenging days.
Visualize Your Gratitude:
- If writing becomes boring, try creating a gratitude board with pictures of good times and achievements. Visual elements enhance the positive impact of your reflections, adding a creative touch to your practice.
Incorporating gratitude into your daily life doesn’t have to be complicated. These simple practices can make it a sustainable and enjoyable part of your routine, bringing positive changes to your mindset and well-being.

Overcoming Challenges With Gratitude
While the benefits of gratitude are substantial, it’s common to face challenges along the way. I’ve faced some myself, and I want to share some of the potential hurdles and how to overcome them. So, if you ever find yourself facing any of these challenges, here’s a guide to help you overcome them:
Feeling Forced or Insincere:
- Challenge: Expressing gratitude may feel forced, leading to insincere acknowledgments.
- Solution: Keep it authentic. Instead of forcing gratitude, take a moment to close your eyes and genuinely reflect on aspects of your life that you appreciate. Let the practice evolve naturally over time. This can be as simple as being grateful for having all your senses or being blessed with another day.
Negative Mindset:
- Challenge: Negative thinking patterns may make feeling grateful challenging.
- Solution: Redirect your focus. Even on challenging days, identify at least one positive thing. It could be a small joy or a moment of gratitude. Shift your mindset towards the positive.
Comparisons to Others:
- Challenge: Comparing your life to others may lead to feelings of inadequacy and hinder gratitude.
- Solution: Focus on your unique journey. Acknowledge your own blessings and experiences without comparing them to others. We all lack something others may have and just know that they probably do not have something you have too. This is why it is so important to just focus on your own blessings.
Overemphasis on Material Things:
- Challenge: Gratitude practices might overly focus on material possessions.
- Solution: Broaden your practice. Include non-material aspects like relationships, personal growth, or experiences. This expands the depth and richness of your reflections.
Lack of Time:
- Challenge: Busy schedules can make finding time for gratitude challenging.
- Solution: Integrate gratitude into your routine. Whether during your morning coffee or before bedtime, find a moment that suits you. Even brief reflections can have a meaningful impact on your day.
