Benefits Of Home Workouts
Before getting into the home ‘gym’ essentials list, let’s explore the advantages of home workouts, especially if you’re just beginning your fitness journey. If you’ve ever felt that hitting the gym was the only way to achieve your fitness goals, these benefits of home workouts may change your perspective:
- Convenience: You can work out at any time that suits your schedule without the need to commute to a gym. This flexibility can allow you to add exercise to your daily routine. Many of us have a very busy lifestyle and sometimes going to the gym can seem impossible. A home workout will allow you to stay consistent due to convenience and help you achieve your fitness goals.
- Time-Saving: Home workouts eliminate the time it takes to commute to and from the gym, making it more efficient. This links back to convenience. For example, as a parent taking the time to commute to the gym and back takes a lot of time from my parenting responsibilities. However, working out from home means I can do it at any time when my daughter is eating, sleeping, or watching TV.
- Family and Child-Friendly: Home workouts allow you to involve your family, and you can get your children to participate in exercise!
- Consistency: You are more likely to stay consistent, as you’re less likely to skip a session due to external factors such as the weather.
- Cost-Effective: Home workouts are often more budget-friendly than gym memberships. You don’t need to pay for gym fees, parking, or travel fees! This saves you money.

Home Workout Equipment On A Budget

1. Workout Mat
This was the first at-home workout equipment that I bought before anything else. And I only had this for a few months before it was time to get other equipment. This is one of the first things you must own to get your fitness journey started.
Here are some of the benefits of having a workout mat:
- Comfort: Workout mats provide a cushioned surface which is more comfortable than exercising directly on the floor. This is especially important when your exercises involve lying down, kneeling, or sitting.
- Joint Protection: The cushioned surface also helps reduce the risk of injuries in your joints during high-impact exercises like jumping or running in place.
- Stability: Mats offer a stable surface by preventing slips and slides during exercises that require balance, such as pilates.

2. Water Bottle
This may not be an at-home workout equipment, but it is definitely a home workout essential! Water is so important regardless if you are on a fitness journey or not. This is because staying properly hydrated is essential for overall health and well-being. When you exercise, you lose fluids through sweat, and maintaining proper hydration is crucial to avoid dehydration.
Dehydration can lead to a drop in energy levels and may result in reduced exercise performance. When you’re properly hydrated, you have more energy which enhances your performance!
I find owning a cute water bottle, especially a water bottle with a straw can really help you stay consistent with drinking water and help you drink enough water. I have a blog post on 7 strategies that have helped me drink enough water every day, which you can benefit from too! You can find the blog post HERE.
I have a Stanley quencher, which is not only cute but it keeps my water cold for 8-11 hours! I have linked my water bottle, as well as another bottle that is a little cheaper than the Stanley.

3. Workout Outfit
A simple workout leggings and top would do! You do not need to have a whole wardrobe of workout attire, only 2-3 so you can alternate whilst the others are being washed. Having a few workout outfits is definitely a workout essential as they are designed to provide comfort and freedom of movement, allowing you to perform exercises with ease. It prevents restrictions that can occur with regular clothing, enabling you to complete your workouts more effectively.

4. Dumbbells/Kettlebells
While my personal preference leans toward dumbbells, the choice between dumbbells and kettlebells ultimately depends on your workout preferences and goals. However, it’s important to emphasize the significance of incorporating weights into your home gym essentials.
incorporating weights into your workout routine is important for enhancing your strength training exercises. Strength training holds immense importance for overall health, particularly as we age. As the years pass, muscle loss becomes a common concern, contributing to a decline in strength.
By including weights in your workouts, you play a significant role in slowing down the loss of muscle tissue. Instead, you actively engage in the process of building and strengthening your muscles.

5. Resistance Bands
Strength training doesn’t always involve weights. Resistance bands can also be added to your strength training workouts. This is because they provide a form of resistance that helps build and strengthen muscles. They are particularly effective for toning and sculpting, allowing you to increase muscle strength over time.

6. Wrist/Ankle Weights
Alongside dumbbells, my wrist/ankle weights are also one of my home ‘gym’ essential favourites that help enhance my strength training workouts. They are not heavy but they definitely provide resistance and make my workouts a challenge. These are perfect for pilates, at-home walking workouts, dance workouts, and even core workouts! I have linked the ones I have and absolutely love – they are the cheaper version of Bala Bangles (which are unnecessarily expensive).

7. Home Gym Machines #1: Exercise Bike
While home “gym” machines are on the pricier side, they can definitely be a home workout essential that makes you feel like you have your own home gym. I absolutely adore this bike for my cardio workouts. We’ve had it for three years, and it’s been the best decision! You can simply hop on, enjoy an effective cardio session, and catch up on your favorite shows simultaneously. Plus, it is not as expensive as most exercise bikes are normally.

8. Home Gym Machines #2: Foldable Treadmill
I personally do not own a treadmill as I had to choose between a bike or a treadmill (to stay within a budget). But if you prefer a treadmill over a bike then this foldable treadmill is for you. It is affordable and convenient as you can fold it and place it in a storage room to avoid it being in the way. Definitely something to consider to add to your home workout essentials!

9. Jump Rope
This is another thing that I personally do not own. But if you like to make your cardio workouts a little challenging and fun but do not want to invest in home gym machines, then a jump rope would be perfect! Using a jump rope can be a great way to improve cardiovascular fitness, increase endurance, and burn calories.

10. Sports Watch
I never knew how essential my watch would be until I started using it to track my calories and steps. This to some people may not be essential but I definitely think it is! Sometimes seeing your progress can be very motivating and can help you stick to your routines. I own the Apple Watch, which I have linked below but I have also linked other affordable ones that have a high review on Amazon.
