Are you dreading the cold days as you feel you may not stay motivated as you did during the summer? Then this is the post for you as I share the 3 most effective ways to stay motivated during autumn/winter.
October is here and the days are only getting colder. I love the cold (only up to February until I am ready for summer again) but I know a lot of people feel the same way I do sometimes – a lack of motivation during the colder and darker days. The motivation that you once had in the warmer days just suddenly disappears.
I wanted to share some of the things that I have started doing which has been helping me to stay motivated. And I know these 3 effective ways will help you stay motivated too.
However, it is super important to know that staying motivated all the time is not possible. We are humans and cannot always stay self motivated. There will be days when you’ll feel like you have lost it completely. I believe that being consistent will help you stay motivated – so if you feel like you are unmotivated, remember that it is normal and the most important thing is to stay consistent.
This post is all about the 3 most effective ways to stay motivated during the cold and dark days.
How To Stay Motivated
1. Pause And Take A Break
We sometimes forget to take a break and just recharge. I do this too often. My husband always says that I just don’t know when to stop – even during my rest days I feel like I need to be doing something. I’ve realised that this just causes me to burn out and leads to feeling so unmotivated for a very long time – it stops me from enjoying the things I should be doing.
So to avoid this I set myself a day where I just stop everything and pause to help me feel recharged. Giving yourself one day a week (this needs to be a weekly thing) to take care of yourself and do the things you enjoy whether that is to curl up in bed and watch a show/movie, or go out with friends or family. Whatever it may be, you should rest or do things you enjoy which will help you keep going and stay motivated.
Some of the things I enjoy doing which help me unwind: spending time with my family, going out with them, watching a movie or show at the end of the day and ordering take out (a rest from cooking) and most importantly some self-care (hair and face mask, full long shower). So find whatever makes you feel good and schedule it for the week. This will help you stay self motivated.
2. Set Weekly and Monthly Goals
Being realistic when setting goals is extremely important! I used to set myself unrealistic goals which I have never achieved. This led me to stop creating my goals and in turn affected my motivation. Since I started setting myself weekly and monthly goals, I feel like I have a purpose that I need to achieve for that month which helps me stay motivated.
Your weekly goals should be the little things you do to help you achieve your monthly goal. For example, if it is to lose 1kg in a month then you need to write down what you need to do every week to help you achieve that. This may sound obvious but the reason I am mentioning this is that previously my weekly and monthly goals did not relate at all. This meant that I was writing too many different goals which overwhelmed me. This can cause a lack of motivation, especially when the days are colder and darker.
The bucket list journal is my absolute favourite journal to use to help guide me with my goals. The journal focuses on 5 categories- – health, wealth, experiences, family and adventures. Sometimes we are unsure about the kind of goals to set ourselves and this journal is amazing in guiding you. After achieving the goals, you have a page to tick the goals off and a separate page to journal around that goal. The journal is super affordable and I also have a discount code that will help you save more: Use my code Mariam15 for 15% off.
3. Eat Healthy And Workout
Have you ever realised how good you feel when you move your body or when you eat a healthy meal? The feeling that you get influences how you get on during the day/week/month. If you are helping your body release serotonin (which can be done through healthy eating and exercising) then you will be able to stay motivated during the colder days.
If you are wondering how to stay motivated to workout, then something that has worked for me is taking these 3 simple steps :
1. Have a workout schedule – schedule time slots at a time that is convenient for you. Do not force yourself to work out at a time that you are unable to just because you feel like you must work out. Do it at the time that best fits around you and your life. This way it won’t feel forced which can affect your motivation and consistency.
2. Have your clothes ready for you to wear. This way you will wake up every morning with everything ready for you and all you need to do is show up.
3. Choose workouts that you enjoy! I remember I used to do exercises that I dreaded doing because all I wanted to do is lose weight. Once I found the type of exercise I enjoyed, it helped me to stay consistent and it is consistency that leads to motivation.
I used to always struggle with motivation, and I still do some days like any normal person. But by being consistent with these three simple steps, I can guarantee that you will see a difference. I hope you found this useful! And remember to stay consistent to see the real results from these three simple yet effective steps.
Lots of love, Mariam x
