Are you wondering how to destress yourself and feel more relaxed? These are 10 simple steps you can take to help you destress your body and mind.
National relaxation day is on the 15th of August and what a way to give yourself an excuse to relax all day. However, I understand that being a mother, sometimes you do not get some time to yourself to relax. So, I recommend you do these few steps during the weekend when your partner is at home or when you’re off work to distress and relax. Or even after your little one’s bedtime to focus on de-stressing your body and mind.
As a mother, I know how important it is to find some time to yourself during the day to just relax. De-stressing yourself at home can make a huge difference and I found that it makes me a better mother. You can’t take care of others if you are not taking care of yourself.
It is not selfish to want to do something for yourself. It took me a while to get this and I still sometimes feel a little guilty if I just spend a few hours away from my daughter as she’s always on my mind.
This post is all about how to destress yourself at home and feel more relaxed.
How To Destress Yourself
How To Destress Your Body
1. Movement
Moving your body can help destress your body, which can overall help destress your mind. Whether you choose to exercise or walk or have a little dance around the house, movement will help to release dopamine and serotonin, which I like to call the happy hormones. And this is what helps to destress your body and make you feel more relaxed.
One of my favourite ways to relax my body is by doing a stretch, especially in the morning, so if you are not someone who enjoys exercising as much or would rather not exercise on the day that you want to relax, then stretch your body. Then feel the magic happen!
2. Have a Bubble Bath/Shower
Light up some candles and create a dim and relaxing environment, whether you choose to have a shower or bath. Having a bath or shower is relaxing in itself, however creating that ‘spa-like’ environment can make you feel extra relaxed. Reward yourself with a long bath or shower and recharge yourself to help destress your body and mind.
3. Have a Healthy Meal
One of my favourite meals of the day is breakfast and I cannot go without breakfast no matter how late or busy I am. Having a healthy breakfast to start your day is key to distressing your body and feeling relaxed but it is also very important to try and have a healthy meal throughout the day as well.
It is said that there are healthy foods that can help lower your stress levels by releasing serotonin and reducing levels of adrenaline which is a stress hormone. This website talks about a few healthy food options that you can have to help de-stress your body.
4. Stay Hydrated
Sometimes when we get too busy we can forget to stay hydrated. I learnt that not staying hydrated can increase the level of stress because of a hormone called cortisol – a stress hormone. If you are someone who does not enjoy drinking water then you can make it fun to help you stay consistent. One way you can do this is by getting yourself a cute bottle, like the one below, that helps you keep track of how much water you’re drinking and when you should be drinking. You can also have fun with it by adding some fruits.

5. Write In A Gratitude Journal
If you follow me on Instagram then you would know how much importance I put into writing in a gratitude journal! I have a blog post where I mentioned why it is so important to have a gratitude journal.
Filling in a gratitude journal and writing about the little things that you are grateful for can help you destress your mind. It can help you realise that no matter how bad the days or the weeks have been, there is so much to be grateful for. For example, maybe you’ve had a really bad day at work or home. If you end your day by writing down what you are most grateful for, this can help you to relax and make you feel less stressed out about what happened during the day.

6. Read A Book
Take some time to sit and read a new book or a book that you haven’t touched in a while to help you keep your mind off things. I found this can help make me feel less stressed.
I am not much of a reader but I do enjoy reading self-development books. One of the self-development books I love and recommend is ‘Atomic Habits’. I haven’t been able to finish it #mumlife, but I have learnt so much from it. If you are someone who struggles to stick to good habits and get rid of bad habits then I highly recommend this book.

7. Listen To Calming Sounds
This will sound weird because a lot of people find it a little bit weird. But listening to ASMR has helped calm my mind and makes me feel relaxed. If ASMR is not your cup of tea, then there are other calming sounds, such as waterfall, rain, and classical music that you can find on youtube.

8. Give Yourself A Pamper
I love having a good pamper day. After having a bath, start with your skincare, apply a face mask, and give yourself a manicure/pedicure. I recently wrote a blog post which included some of the best skincare products for dry skin, check it out!
I recently got myself an at-home foot spa pedicure bath that was super affordable and I now add a pedicure to my pamper days. I’ve added a few that I found on Amazon which is super affordable.

Giving yourself a pamper will help you have some ‘you’ time and overall help you destress yourself.
9. Clean Your Home
I know what you might be thinking, how can cleaning the home be relaxing? But believe it or not, some people do find cleaning very distressing and relaxing. This does not mean deep cleaning unless you want to of course. What I mean is organising and tidying up because like they say clean house, clean mind.
I love creating a to-do list before I start cleaning and I love the Mrs Hinch book to-do list because 1. it is so pretty and 2. it helps keep everything organised for me. And it’s satisfying to tick things off.

10. Spend Time With Your Loved Ones
Although this may not be ‘you’ time, spending time with your loved ones can help make you feel happy which as I mentioned before can help release serotonin. This helps with the stress you may be feeling. There are so many activities you can do at home with your family to destress yourself. For example, movie or game night are my absolute favourites!
