Designing your baby’s room before they arrive is such a fun project! I remember sitting there on Pinterest for hours upon hours and creating a vision board on what I wanted her room to look like. However, every baby nursery ideas I saw on Pinterest that met my vision were all big rooms. This made me think that I would not have enough space to design the room the way I wanted.
If you are wondering ‘how do I maximise my nursery space?’ then this post will show you how, as my little girl’s room is the smallest in the house. So we had to think about how to use the space we have to keep everything organised and make the room look beautiful.
I will share the ways I made enough space for her baby essentials by adding everything necessary for a baby nursery room and saving money for the long term.
This post is all about baby nursery ideas for small rooms.

Decorating Tips To Maximise Room And Wall Space:
1. Decoration Idea #1: Wall Colour
Colours like white, cool grey and neutrals help to make a room look bigger so make sure to opt for these colours. For Ayah’s room, we went for white to open up the space but also to give us more options on the kind of theme we wanted to go for – as white goes with any colour furniture and theme.
2. Decoration Idea #2: Shelves
Adding shelves to the room can help to maximise wall space and give you space to store some things in. We bought a chest drawer and had so much space above it. However, as the room is so small we couldn’t get a big mirror to place above the drawers so we decided to get a small one and place three shelves next to it.
Shelves
How you use the shelves is totally up to you but some ideas could be: books, decorations (wooden toys), baby journals, picture frames, and wooden toys. I have added some links above to some things you can add to your shelves. The way we utilised that space was by adding a few memorable things such as the photo of her second scan, a baby journal that I filled out during her first year, a baby monitor camera and the other space was used to just decorate by adding a faux plant pot and a box of pocketbooks.
3. Decoration Idea #3: Wall Art
Wall art is a way to make a nursery room look so beautiful and I remember thinking that I wouldn’t be able to add any wall art because of how small the room is. However, I am here to tell you that you can add wall art and utilise the wall space that you do have but at the same time not overdo it. There are so many wall art ideas you can do, such as wall stickers, frames or even shelves!
|f you are looking to add wall stickers or adding some frames then one way to do this in a small room is by adding them on the wall next to the cot as I have in the picture above. It’s all about maximising wall space! Desenio does the most beautiful nursery frames. Check out their website to see some of their options. The two I got are from Desenio: the one on the left is the Dreaming Whale Poster and the right one is the Dreaming Elephant Poster.
Choose Your Furniture Wisely
Choosing your furniture wisely is important to ensure that you are not only saving money in the long term but also not making the room look smaller than it already is. I know it can be tempting to buy all these nursery furniture that you see on Google or Pinterest – believe me, I know the feeling.
When I was planning Ayah’s nursery the one piece of furniture I wanted was a rocking chair because they just look so pretty in a nursery room. However, there was no space for it. This is not to say you can’t have a rocking chair but you need to think about what is the most important piece of furniture.
4. Furniture Idea #1: Chest Drawer
A chest drawer can be utilised in so many ways. You can maximise space by getting a chest drawer instead of a changing table by placing a changing mat on top of it and using it for storage such as clothes and nappies. We got our one from Ikea which was around £70-£80 and changed the drawer handles to gold to match the colour theme of the room.
You can never go wrong with having a chest drawer in the nursery. It can be used in the long term too, unlike a changing table that you will hardly use, a lot of mums would agree with me, you hardly change your little one’s nappy in their room and also will have to be given or thrown away once they stop wearing nappies.
I will go a little further on storage ideas later in this post but I used the top of the drawer to place a few baby essentials and a lamp. We bought a beautiful baby caddy to put her nappies, nappy cream, wipes etc inside. Next to it, we placed a spinning storage organiser to place her shampoo, body wash and lotions which kept everything nicely organised.
5. Furniture Idea #2: Baby Cot
This one is obvious but I wanted to add it in to share how we made sure we purchased a cot that would last us for at least 5 years. The size of the cot is down to how small the room is. Ayah’s room is a ‘box room’ and her cot is 60x120cm. The best thing about this cot is that when Ayah is ready for a big kid bed all we need to do is open up one of the sides and she’s got herself a bed that can last her at least until the age of 5! We got the cot from Ikea (without a mattress) and it was £90 which is super affordable compared to some of the cots I’ve seen.
So, the aim here is to purchase a cot that is not only the perfect size to fit in the room but also invest in a cot that opens up on the side to last you longer than 2-3years – saving you money!
If you are looking for a bedside crib for the first few months then check out my blog post where I share some of the pros and cons of the bedside crib we had.

6. Furniture Idea #3: Wardrobe
A wardrobe isn’t a must if you have no choice and have to choose between a chest drawer or a wardrobe. We had some space next to the chest drawer and needed to decide what would be useful. And of course, it was a wardrobe. We designed our wardrobe at Ikea to choose how we want the inside to look, the kind of doors we want, the colour etc. The reason why we didn’t go for a typical baby wardrobe (which is small) and why I wouldn’t recommend anyone do if you are trying to save money is because just like the changing table it would need to be given away at some point. However, with the normal size wardrobe we got (100x60x201cm) we have enough space to hang her clothes and fold her clothes too.
Getting a normal-size wardrobe can be money-saving in the long run. This is because when she gets older she can still use her wardrobe. If you are stuck deciding whether to get a drawer or a wardrobe due to lack of space, I would recommend a wardrobe. The reason for that is that you can have a rail and drawers so a wardrobe can function like a chest drawer.

7. Nursery Storage Idea #1: Drawer Organisers
Drawer organisers are so helpful in keeping everything organised but I also found that it helps to create more space. You can decide how you use the drawer organisers but a way we used it for her chest drawer was by organising her nappies, medicines and books.
The reason why we got one for her books was that we did not have enough space to put up a shelf for her books. The shelves you put up above the chest drawer can be used for books if the drawer is needed for something else. However, if you wish to use the shelves for a different purpose then storing books in a drawer organiser is one way to maximise space and keep the books organised.
For the wardrobe drawers, you can use the drawer organised to divide their clothes for their vests (different organisers for different sleeve lengths), sleep-suits, sleep bags, pyjama tops and bottoms, socks etc.
8. Nursery Storage Idea #2: Baskets
Baskets do not only look good but they make a great way to create storage space that you usually don’t get enough of in a small room.
I have used baskets in three different ways that you can do in your little ones’ room too. One way I utilised a basket is by placing it inside the wardrobe to store all her hair accessories. I also have a little basket caddy on top of her chest drawer that I used for nappies and wipes. And you can also put their favourite little toys in there too. Now when I don’t use it for her nappies, which is 80% of the time, I put in a few bits and bobs that I have no space to put anywhere else.

9. Closest Nursery Ideas #1: Age Dividers
In the beginning, I thought these would be so unnecessary and a complete waste of money. However, after so many gifted clothes these were a necessity. We all get families and friends gifting our little one clothes and the majority of the time they are clothes that are a few sizes up. They eventually get so mixed up in their wardrobe that you just do not know what fits them and what doesn’t. Because of this Ayah missed out on wearing some of the clothes we got her or were gifted because they got mixed up. After getting these dividers I was able to tell which item of clothing is suitable for her now and which are for later on.
I hope you found this useful and helps you to make use of every space in your little one’s room!
Lots of Love Mariam
