Waking up for suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, is more than just making the intention to fast—it’s your opportunity to fuel your body for the day ahead. But simply eating isn’t enough; choosing the right foods is essential. A healthy suhoor can keep you full, hydrated, and energized, while an unhealthy, high-sodium meal can leave you thirsty and fatigued during fasting hours.
In my tips for a balanced Ramadan, I always stress the importance of starting your day with nourishing foods. Suhoor is the perfect time to focus on meals that are high in protein and fiber, helping you stay full until iftar. From hearty suhoor recipes to lighter options, there’s something for every morning—whether you’re craving a substantial meal or just a quick, nourishing smoothie.

Healthy Suhoor Ideas
What To Eat For Suhoor To Stay Full:
Suhoor is an essential part of the fasting month. It is crucial to choose foods that provide sustained energy throughout the day and keep you hydrated. Here are some good options to add to your suhoor recipes which are also included in the 10 healthy suhoor ideas I provided below:
Complex Carbohydrates:
- Whole grains such as oats (organic jumbo or steel-cut oats as they are not processed like other oats), brown rice, and quinoa provide a steady release of energy
- Whole grain bread (I recommend sourdough bread)
Protein:
- Eggs
- Greek yogurt (full fat and plain)
- Meats such as chicken.
Healthy Fats:
- Avocado
- Nuts and seeds like almonds, walnuts, chia seeds, and flaxseeds provide healthy fats and protein.
Fruits And Vegtables:
- Fresh fruits and vegetables provide vitamins, minerals, and hydration. They also contain fiber, which helps with digestion.
- Bananas are a great source of potassium, helping you reduce thirst throughout the day.
Hydration:
- Water! Drink plenty of water during suhoor. But do not drink so much that you end up having to urinate because you’ll just end up losing all that water you had. You can split the amount you drink between suhoor and Iftar (e.g. 500-700ml during suhoor and 1.3-1.5L during iftar).
- Avoid caffeinated drinks as they can lead to increased urine production and contribute to dehydration.
- Herbal teas (peppermint tea is amazing!)
Dairy Products:
- Milk (full fat)
- Cheese (full fat)
Avoid Sugar And Salty Foods:
- While natural sugars in fruits are okay, it’s best to avoid sugary cereals, pastries, and sweetened drinks as they can lead to a quick spike in blood sugar followed by a crash.
- Foods high in sodium will only make you thirsty throughout the day.
10 Healthy Suhoor Recipes
1. Avocado, Eggs, And Bread
This is a very simple healthy suhoor that you can meal prep or make during suhoor. It is so simple yet so filling and packed with vitamins and protein.
During Ramadan, if you know you will be too tired to fry an egg then the best thing to do is boil an egg the night before. When you wake up you can just toast whole grain sourdough, mash one avocado on top, and grate the boiled eggs on top, or even just cut it in half and place it on top.
Here is a recipe I use when making this suhoor recipe:
- 1 sourdough bread (toasted)
- 1/2 avocado
- 3-4 boiled eggs
- Drizzle of extra virgin olive oil
- Hemp and pumpkin seeds
Instructions:
- Toast the sourdough bread and then spread the mashed avocado on top.
- Drizzle some olive oil on top and add the hemp and pumpkin seeds (about a tsp each)
- Then cut up your boiled eggs and add them on top or you can just leave them on the side and add some sea salt on top if you wish
2. Veggie Omelette
This is one of my favourites and I tend to make this one the most during Ramadan. It keeps me so full and nourished during my fasting hours! So simple, delicious, and can quickly be made during Suhoor time.
3. Superfood Bowl
This healthy suhoor recipe is so easy to make, and it contains protein, fiber, iron, magnesium and so many other health benefits! If you want to increase your protein intake, then I recommend you swap the full-fat milk for full-fat Greek yogurt – this will make it even more filling, with all the goodness in this bowl!
For this suhoor recipe, all you’ll need is homemade nutty granola (please avoid store-bought as they are packed with hidden refined sugars and do not use jumbo oats), 1 or 1/2 banana (contains potassium so it will make you feel less thirsty throughout the day), chia seeds, hemp seeds, cocoa nibs, and full-fat milk (low-fat milk such as skimmed or semi-skimmed can spike your blood sugar levels, making you super hungry during the fasting period. You can always swap the milk with Greek yogurt).
Here is my superfood bowl recipe:
- Homemade granola – I have two granola recipes that are delicious and so easy to make: Click the one you want to try out: 1. Banana Bread Granola or 2. Nutty Granola
- 1/2 banana sliced
- Berries (I usually add blueberries and raspberries)
- 1 tsp hemp seeds, chia seeds, flaxseed, cacao nibs
- Milk or Greek yogurt (Greek yogurt would be great for extra added protein!!)
Instructions:
- Add the granola to a bowl. Then add the fruits on top and sprinkle with the hemp seeds, chia, flaxseed and cacao nibs
- Then pour in your milk. If you will be using Greek yogurt, then make sure to add the yogurt first and then add the rest of the ingredients.
4. Cottage Cheese Egg Salad Bagel
This suhoor recipe is a great meal prep! You can meal prep everything in this recipe.
You can make the cottage cheese egg salad and store it in the fridge (this is eaten cold so it can stay in the fridge), make a batch of homemade Greek yogurt bagels, and you can have the rocket, berries, kiwi washed and stored. And at suhoor time you can assemble the meal!
High in protein and fiber and will keep you full and nourished throughout the day!
5. Cottage Cheese Pancakes
Pancakes are another amazing meal prep idea, and you can definitely make a batch to store in the fridge/freezer. Of course, we are not going to be having sugary, unhealthy pancakes for suhoor!
But if you are looking for the best healthy pancakes, then check out my very popular cottage cheese pancake recipe – you will absolutely love it and do not worry you cannot taste the cottage cheese!
Here are a few things you can top up your pancakes to keep this recipe healthy and filling:
- Berries (I recommend adding raspberries and blueberries with this recipe)
- Nut Butter (Almond or cashew butter goes so well with these pancakes!)
- A dollop of Greek yogurt
6. Nut Butter And Banana On Sourdough
I have an obsession with nut butter (especially almond and cashew butter), and I would add it to anything I can add it to. This is another filling and healthy suhoor idea. All you need for this healthy suhoor idea is a nut butter of your choice, 1 banana, and chia seeds.
Add the nut butter to your whole-grain sourdough, then top it up with banana slices and sprinkle some chia seeds on top.
I highly recommend adding 2 boiled eggs on the side for extra protein so it keeps you full during the day!

7. French Toast Sourdough
This is one of my favourites and keeps me super full. You can definitely prep these the night before and then just reheat in a pan. Or you can just prep the eggs the night before so you can just dip your bread and fry it, and it’ll be ready in just 5 minutes!
Recipe for this suhoor idea:
- 1 large sourdough slice
- 2-3 eggs
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon powder
- nut butter of your choice
- berries of your choice (I love adding blueberries)
- maple syrup (this is optional but I only use very little to reduce the sugar)
Beat the egg with the cinnamon, then preheat your pan and add butter or coconut oil. Dip your toast on both sides (I usually cut my sourdough in half before dipping) until fully covered. Fry your toast on both sides until nice and golden.
Then spread your nut butter on top, and add blueberries. So so good!!
8. Chia Pudding
As I have mentioned many times above, chia seeds are amazing, especially for suhoor. This is because they’re packed with vitamins and minerals that will keep you fuller throughout the day.
I shared a strawberry chia pudding, which is the BEST chia pudding recipe I have ever had! You will for sure be obsessed with this recipe.
I recommend adding 2 boiled eggs on the side for extra protein and to keep you fuller for longer.
