Free things to do in Doha, including Souq Waqif, The Pearl Island, and stunning museums—explore the city’s best attractions on any budget.

Before we visited Doha, we assumed it would be an extremely expensive destination because that’s all we ever heard people say. And yes—it’s true that flights to Doha can cost more compared to other places, and eating out isn’t as cheap as, for example, dining in Egypt.
But what really surprised us was how many free things to do in Doha there actually are. In fact, most of the attractions on our itinerary didn’t cost us a single riyal! On top of that, we also discovered plenty of affordable food spots, budget-friendly shopping in Doha, and even hotels that felt luxurious without breaking the bank.
That’s why I’ve put this guide together: to share the best free things to do in Qatar (including popular spots like Souq Waqif, the Museum of Islamic Art, Katara Mosque, and the Education City Mosque) along with a price list for the paid attractions. This way, you’ll know exactly which places to visit in Doha for free and what to expect if you want to add a few extras to your trip.
Doha truly surprised us—it’s one of the most beautiful and peaceful cities we’ve ever visited. And the best part? You can absolutely experience the luxury and charm of Doha on a budget. In fact, during our 5-night stay, we spent less money in Doha than we did in Istanbul on our first trip in 2024. So if you’re looking for cheap things to do in Qatar while still enjoying the city’s luxurious vibe, this guide is for you!

Places To Visit In Qatar (Doha) For Free
1. Mina District

There are shops in this area, but you don’t need to spend a thing—we didn’t! We simply went to explore, and honestly, it’s one of the most picturesque spots in Doha. The Mina District is completely free to enter, and you can wander through its colorful buildings, take stunning photos, soak up the views, and enjoy a truly beautiful experience without spending a single riyal.
2. National Museum Of Qatar

The National Museum of Qatar is one of Doha’s most iconic landmarks, with its unique architecture inspired by the desert rose. It’s absolutely stunning from the outside and makes for another incredible photo spot in the city. When we visited, it was the end of a long day and almost dinner time, so we didn’t actually go inside—but even just walking around the building was an experience in itself.
If you do want to explore the exhibits, tickets cost around £5, but the great thing is that it’s completely free to enjoy the exterior and take in the unique design.
3. Museum Of Islamic Art

The Museum of Islamic Art is another must-visit spot in Doha. While entry to the museum itself costs around £5 per person (which is very budget-friendly), it’s completely free to walk around the outside grounds and visit the fountain area. From here, you’ll get one of the most breathtaking views of the Doha skyline—it’s a popular spot for both tourists and locals because it’s so picturesque and perfect for photos.
Even if you’re traveling on a budget, I highly recommend stepping inside the museum. The collection of Islamic history and art is incredible, and the architecture of the building itself is just as beautiful as the exhibits inside.
4. Souq Waqif

Souq Waqif quickly became one of our favorite places in Doha—we found ourselves returning almost every evening. The atmosphere at night is amazing, with the cooler weather drawing in crowds and creating such lively, vibrant vibes. Best of all, it’s completely free to enter and wander around, so you can experience traditional market life in Doha without spending a thing.
Of course, if you do want to shop, the souq has endless options—souvenirs, abayas, clothes, antiques, and so much more. There are also plenty of restaurants to choose from. We ate at Bandar Aden and ordered their most popular dish, Zerbaian meat (a delicious mix of lamb, rice, and potato). They said it was for two people, but the portion could have easily fed 4–5! It only cost 60 QAR (around £13), and the lamb was so tender it fell apart with every bite. We still wish we had gone back for another meal!
So whether you’re just strolling around, shopping, or dining, Souq Waqif is the perfect spot to enjoy Doha on a budget.
5. Katara Cultural Village

Another must-see spot in Doha is Katara Cultural Village, home to the beautifully designed Katara Mosque. This area is completely free to visit, and you can spend time walking around, admiring the stunning architecture, and taking in the peaceful surroundings. The mosque itself is a masterpiece—its intricate details and unique design make it one of the most photogenic places in the city.
Doha’s architecture is truly unique, and Katara is the perfect place to see that beauty up close, capture some incredible photos, and enjoy the atmosphere—all without spending a single riyal.

6. Place Vendome Mall

Okay, I know what you’re thinking—a mall usually means spending money, so it might not seem like a “free” activity. But Place Vendôme Mall is so much more than a shopping center, and many people visit purely for its unique design. Built to resemble a grand palace, the mall features stunning architecture and even a beautiful water fountain show—all of which you can enjoy completely free.
Of course, if you do fancy grabbing a bite, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants. We tried the viral Milk Bun, and honestly, it was the best burger and fries we’ve ever had! (I’ve also rounded up more recommendations in my post on 6 restaurants in Doha).
So even if you’re on a budget, you don’t have to spend a penny to enjoy Place Vendôme. Simply wander around, soak in the luxurious vibe, catch the fountain show, and you’re done!
7. The Pearl Island

The Pearl Qatar is another one of my favorite free things to do in Doha—and honestly, it felt like stepping into a fairy tale. This area is completely free to walk around, with its charming marina, picturesque buildings, and canals that give it a little Venetian vibe.
We also enjoyed one of the most stunning views of the Katara Towers during sunset. Truly, this place felt magical—we still think about it even a year later! There are plenty of cafés if you want to stop for a bite, but we chose to simply stroll around and soak in the breathtaking scenery.
8. Villaggio Mall

Villaggio Mall is another popular spot in Doha, mainly because of its unique design. The interior feels like you’re outdoors, complete with a mini Venice inside and even gondolas! Entry is completely free, so you can wander around, admire the architecture, and take in the atmosphere without spending a penny.
There are plenty of cafés and fast food options if you want to grab a bite. That’s actually the only money we spent there—we didn’t buy anything from the shops since most of the brands are also available in the UK, so it wasn’t really necessary.
9. Education City Mosque

The Education City Mosque is absolutely stunning and definitely worth a visit in Doha. Its unique architecture and beautiful design make it a standout, and you can even see Quranic verses beautifully displayed on the exterior. Many people visit simply to admire the mosque’s elegance and the clever, modern design. From the outside, it feels magical and is a perfect spot for photos and soaking in the serene atmosphere.
Other (paid activities): Prices May Change
Boat ride around Al Corniche (near the Pearl Monument): Usually priced at around £6, but we managed to haggle it down to £3 as they are more likely to over charge tourists.
Museum of Islamic Art: £10 per person (this is just for the museum)
National Museum of Qatar: £5 per person (this is just for the museum)
Banana Island Day Pass: £80 per person. This is a full-day experience on one of the most beautiful islands we’ve ever visited. The pass includes a £40 food voucher valid at any of the island’s restaurants, £15 for activities, and a luxury boat transfer to and from the island—definitely worth it!
Cheap Way To Get Around Doha
We were honestly so surprised at how affordable cabs are in Doha! With so many free things to do in Doha, having cheap transport makes exploring the city even easier without breaking the bank.
I highly recommend downloading the cab app “Taxif”—the fares were incredibly low, and the cars always arrived quickly. When we visited in October 2024, a 25-minute ride cost about £7, which is incredible compared to prices in the UK. The good news is that Doha is compact, so the furthest you’ll usually travel from one attraction to another is around 30 minutes.
In my Things to Do in Doha blog post, I’ve included a 4-day itinerary that groups attractions close together, so you can travel efficiently by cab without spending much on transport.
