7 Day Cortisol Reset Challenge
Morning Cortisol Reset Habits
No Screens For The First 30 Minutes
The first thing many people do upon waking is to check their notifications before even rolling out of bed, not realizing how much this small action impacts their entire day. While you might feel fine, this habit can immediately spike your cortisol levels, setting the tone for a more stressful day ahead.
To help regulate your cortisol and keep it in a healthy range, it’s essential to avoid phones or any type of screen for at least the first 30 minutes after waking. If you can stretch this to an hour, even better!
During this screen-free time, focus on completing the rest of your morning routine which are all the other steps I am about to share with you under the morning cortisol reset habits.
Hydrate First Thing

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to support a cortisol reset is by hydrating as soon as you wake up. After hours of sleep, your body is naturally dehydrated, and rehydrating promptly can help lower cortisol levels and support adrenal health.
Water aids in reducing stress on your adrenal glands, which produce cortisol, allowing them to function more efficiently. Starting your day with hydration also helps balance your body’s stress response, improve energy levels, and set the tone for a more focused and calm day ahead.
Aim for a glass of water upon waking to kickstart this cortisol-lowering habit. It is even better if you add a pinch of Celtic sea salt and 1-2 tsp of fresh lemon juice to create natural electrolytes to enhance hydrating your adrenal glands.
Fresh Air And Deep Breathing
Starting your day with fresh air and deep breathing can work wonders for resetting cortisol levels and calming your nervous system. In fact, deep breathing is one of the quickest ways to calm your nervous system.
Whether you step outside into your garden, onto a balcony, or simply open your windows, the fresh air helps oxygenate your body and mind, promoting relaxation and focus.
Pair this with deep breathing exercises—inhale deeply through your nose for four counts, hold for four counts, and exhale slowly for six counts. This simple practice activates your nervous system, signaling to your body that it’s safe to reduce cortisol production.
Even a few minutes of this morning cortisol reset habit (about 3- 5 minutes or just 10-20 deep breaths) can leave you feeling more grounded, clear-headed, and ready for the day ahead.
High Protein Breakfast In The First Hour

Fueling your body with a balanced breakfast within the first hour of waking helps regulate your cortisol levels and sets the tone for steady energy throughout the day. Opt for a savory meal with a protein target of around 25–30 grams, such as eggs, meats, or a hearty breakfast bowl.
Protein stabilizes blood sugar levels, which prevents cortisol spikes that can occur with sugary or carb-heavy breakfasts. Adding healthy fats and fiber to your meal can further support balanced energy and a calm start to your day. Prioritizing a nutrient-rich breakfast is a simple but powerful way to nourish your body and manage stress effectively.

Gratitude
Starting your day with gratitude can shift your mindset and help lower cortisol levels by promoting feelings of calm and positivity. Taking just a few minutes to reflect on what you’re thankful for—big or small—can set a powerful tone for the rest of your day.
Writing these thoughts down makes the practice even more impactful, allowing you to focus and revisit them whenever you need a boost. If you’re looking for a structured and inspiring way to start this habit, my gratitude journal is a great tool to help you stay consistent. It’s designed to make practicing gratitude simple and effective, helping you cultivate a more positive outlook every day.
Caffeine After Breakfast
If you enjoy your morning coffee or tea, timing it right can make a big difference in managing cortisol levels and supporting better sleep quality. Aim to have your caffeine after breakfast rather than on an empty stomach. This helps prevent unnecessary cortisol spikes and ensures your body is properly fueled to handle the stimulating effects of caffeine.
During this cortisol reset challenge, consume only one serving of caffeine, and make sure to have it before 12 PM. Even if it doesn’t feel like caffeine affects your sleep, consuming it later in the day can disrupt your natural sleep cycles.

During The Day Cortisol Reset Habits
A Break From Screens Every Hour
In today’s digital world, we’re often glued to screens, which can elevate stress levels and strain your eyes. Taking short breaks every hour allows your mind and body to reset, helping to keep cortisol levels in check.
Use this time to stretch, look out a window, or even step outside for a quick breath of fresh air. These small moments of rest can make a big difference in your focus and stress levels throughout the day.
Even better if you go for a short walk after at least one meal instead of going straight back to your phones or laptops to work. This doesn’t have to be a strenuous workout—just a gentle stroll to help improve digestion, clear your mind, and give you a chance to reset.
30 Grams Of Protein During Lunch And Dinner
Eating a balanced meal with around 30 grams of protein at lunch and dinner helps stabilize blood sugar levels, preventing insulin spikes that can trigger cortisol production. Protein-rich and cortisol-lowering foods, such as chicken, fish, meat, and eggs, support sustained energy throughout the day.
By including a healthy portion of protein in your meals, you can reduce the likelihood of blood sugar crashes that lead to increased stress and hunger later in the day. This simple habit not only keeps your energy levels steady but also helps regulate your body’s stress response, contributing to a more balanced, calm state.
If you can’t go outside, just a walk around the house or office is enough!
No Sugary Snacks

Foods high in added sugars can cause rapid blood sugar spikes and crashes, which can trigger the release of cortisol as your body works to stabilize itself. By opting for snacks that are high in protein or contain no sugar, you can avoid these fluctuations and maintain a calm, steady state of energy.
Some great no-sugar snack ideas include:
- A handful of nuts or seeds
- Veggie sticks with hummus
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Plain full fat Greek yogurt with fresh berries
- Medjool dates with nut butter
Workout During The Cortisol Reset Challenge
For these 7 days, focus on low-impact movement, with a simple 20-30 minute walk each day from Monday to Saturday. Walking is a gentle, cortisol-reducing workout that helps promote relaxation, improve circulation, and clear your mind without stressing your body.
Many high-intensity workouts can actually spike cortisol levels, especially if you’re already stressed or overwhelmed. By opting for walks, you’re giving your adrenals the break they need while still keeping your body active and energized.
On Sunday, take it easy with a 10-minute stretch. Stretching helps reduce tension, improve flexibility, and further lower cortisol levels, setting you up for a restful week ahead.
Evening Cortisol Reset Habits
Do One Thing You Love
In the evening, make time for something that brings you joy and helps you unwind. Engaging in an activity you love signals to your body that it’s time to relax, which helps lower cortisol levels and improve your overall sense of well-being. This could be anything that makes you feel calm and content, whether it’s reading, listening to a podcast, or enjoying a hobby.
For me, one of my favorite evening rituals is watching a Turkish series while enjoying a healthy snack and sipping on peppermint tea. This simple activity allows me to relax, disconnect from the day, and focus on something enjoyable. Find your own version of this calming ritual, and make it part of your nightly routine for a stress-free end to your day.
Devices Off 1 Hour Before Bed
One of the best ways to prepare your mind and body for sleep is by turning off all devices at least one hour before bed. The blue light emitted by phones, tablets, computers, and TV can interfere with your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle, making it harder to fall asleep and lowering the quality of your rest.
Instead of scrolling through screens, use this time to engage in activities that help you unwind. You could read a book, do some gentle stretches, meditate, or simply enjoy a quiet moment with a cup of herbal tea. These activities signal to your body that it’s time to relax, helping lower cortisol and promoting a smoother transition into a restful night’s sleep.
5 Minute Deep Breathing

Before bed, incorporating just 5 minutes of deep breathing can be a game-changer for lowering cortisol and preparing your body for restful sleep. Deep breathing activates the nervous system, which helps calm your mind, reduce stress, and promote relaxation.
Simply find a comfortable position, inhale deeply through your nose for a count of four, hold for four, and exhale slowly through your mouth for six. Check out this 5-minute deep breathing meditation that I absolutely love doing before bed and really calms me down!
Drink A Cup Of Herbal Tea
In the evening, sipping on herbal tea is a simple yet powerful way to promote relaxation and reduce cortisol levels before bed. Herbal teas like peppermint or chamomile are known for their soothing properties.
Peppermint tea can help ease digestion and relieve tension, while chamomile is renowned for its calming effects, helping to reduce anxiety and prepare your body for restful sleep.
Taking a few moments to unwind with a warm cup of tea can signal to your body that it’s time to relax. Whether you enjoy it alone in a quiet moment or as part of your evening routine, herbal tea is a wonderful natural remedy to enhance your wind-down process and support a peaceful, stress-free night.
Get 7-9 Hours Of Sleep
Getting adequate rest is one of the most effective ways to reset your cortisol levels and support overall health. Aim to be in bed by 10 PM and get between 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep each night. Sleep is when your body performs essential repair processes, regulates hormone levels, and recovers from daily stress.
By setting a consistent bedtime and allowing your body the rest it needs, you can help stabilize cortisol and improve your mood, energy, and focus the next day. Prioritizing sleep not only reduces stress but also helps improve immune function, mental clarity, and overall well-being. Make sleep a non-negotiable part of your routine for optimal health and a calm, balanced mind.
